Dn Benedict Sim (VBS 2016 Director)

This year we had an exciting journey through the Story of Joseph - Faith is the Victory! We shared about Joseph’s life story, which through faith and perseverance, had a victorious finale.

This is an original VBS program which I discussed with Ps Quek, and by faith we pushed ahead with the decision.

The story and the slides from our storytellers were created from ground up, and we learnt a new theme song “Jesus is a wonderful Savior” where we had our very talented Sis Hui Chuien putting the musical score together for our pianist.

1.    On Day 1 we shared who Joseph was, his family, the rainbow coat, his brothers and how he was eventually sold off as a slave.

2.    On Day 2 we learned how Joseph did well in his master’s house, and overcame temptations albeit not with a positive outcome.

3.    On Day 3 we were encouraged, where Joseph’s faith in God persisted in the face of adversity. He had a wonderful ending, being promoted as a senior leader of Egypt, saving both the Egyptians and his family when the 7 years of famine came, proving that our wonderful God took care of them.

God’s word will never return void (Isa 55:11), and we trust the children were edified with excellent take aways from the 3 days of VBS stories, songs, and crafts, and lively sharing on the learnings and applications.

“Serve the Lord with gladness!” (Psalm 100:2) The Psalmist echoed and this was reflected in the cheerful service rendered to Christ in this VBS 2016 ministry from all 110 staff including the core team. Praise the LORD!

Pastor Quek exhorted in closing from Ecc 11:1 “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.” Indeed, the gospel seed sown and planted will surely not return void (Isa 55:11). This is certainly true as we have children coming across the causeway with mummy driving to our VBS.

I shared about the 3Ms: Mission, Memory and Mandate during the Pre-VBS briefing on May 15 from Mat 19:14, “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

We thank God for having a total of 240 children who came to our VBS ranging from N2 to P4, with some older accompanying siblings and friends who came. It was a great family time for both the children and the helpers as we all laboured with joy, and sweated with delight together under the humid weather. I have been blessed and am encouraged, as I witnessed the mighty hand of God working through the events to bring all His work to fruition.

We had 87 Kindy (N2 to K2) children and 153 Primary (P1 to P4), where by God’s providence, 2 bus loads of 53 SCC children who joined us came all the way from Yishun safely. We welcomed 56 FEK students who joined us too, both past and present. 91 Parents signed up their children for our Mailbox Correspondence Course too, which will enable us to continue to share the gospel with the children.

The logs team supported 240 children, 110 helpers, and the traffic team by God’s grace managed the cars of 127 VBS parents who came by everyday for the 3 days!

The F&B team fed 370 folks including our church staff.

The teachers, story tellers, song leaders, pianists, PA Team, games and craft personnel supported and provided much joy to all participants!

To God be the glory for all the great things He has done.

VERY LEAN CORE TEAM - Unlike before where we had close working partners, we went by faith and I praise God for sustaining each of the HODs especially, those who were working with 1 less partner. In other words, the team had to work doubly hard and double the duration to deliver the VBS program deliverables in the same limited time during the pre-VBS preparation. We did not have the decor team this year as we were severely short handed, but thank God for providing the 16 pre VBS Helpers who came together and doubled up as the decor setup team, in double the area we had before!

LARGER AREA - We took a different approach this year by splitting the children into 2 different groups in 2 different locations namely - Kindy (N2 to K2) to be conducted at the Gilstead 9/9A which is where FEK and the Church Sanctuary is. This worked out very well as the facilities were already designed especially for young children. No stair-climbing needed which is safer for our very young children, and as such, minimized risks. The Primary department programme which is for children from P1 to P4 (which included some older friends and siblings) was conducted at Beulah House similar to past years. The parents got to see the VBS singing as they waited at the sanctuary 2nd floor, and also at the rear of the MPH towards the end of each day.

WEATHER - Thank God for the church support as we set up tents to allow more outdoor activities to shelter all participants from the sun and the rain. Although, we anticipated rain, a full thorough heavy shower came on the 1st day of VBS. Well we prayed for a memorable VBS and we did have one! The children were having a wet and wild time as we kicked off wet weather plans, and the children were having fun with the puddles. On the next two days there was good sunshine throughout.

TIME – I want to express much appreciation for many of the helpers who stepped forward to support the VBS event in the morning. Many sacrificed their personal time, while others had to rush back to work in the afternoon. The demand of our secular work is ever increasing, and so is the demand in the Christian ministry, and I thank God for enabling and moving the hearts of many who stepped forward to serve. It is true, “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” Hebrews 6:10

FOOD - Working from the FEK kitchen to feed the numerous folks was an uphill task, but this did not deter our wonder ladies. Instead they made use of the larger open area to accomplish greater work for Christ by keeping the children and helpers all well fed! The snacks and lunch were fantastic!

Every year the VBS will be held on the 1st week of June, Wed to Fri, with Mon & Tues being the preparation days. Similar to church camp, and other ministries, we need manpower, especially the planning committee. We invite you to join us

Time passes extremely fast and we have started planning for 2017. We need people in the core team for various roles such as HOD and support for Kindy, Primary, Food, PA, Registration, Admin, Games, Logs, F&B, Story Tellers, Musicians, Song Leaders, Photographers, Poster and Craft designers, Decor Team and Traffic Control Team.

Do not hesitate, and I pray the Lord will move your heart and mind to come forth and taste His goodness as we put our trust and faith in service for VBS. It is not easy, it is challenging and this is where we see how our almighty God guides and provides through his humble servants who avail themselves.

Timeline -

3Q & 4Q establish core team and theme

1Q full steam planning and preparations.

2Q execute the plan & registration

3Q 1st week - Actual VBS.

Someone shared with me that VBS is like childbirth. John 16:31 - A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. The anxiety of preparation, the aches and pains after going through the VBS, and finally the joy in seeing the fruit of the labour, of accomplishing God’s work, when it has come to completion, is beyond description. We can only thank Jehovah Jireh, our God our provider for everything.

Such is the joy that cannot be taken away from us, for it is our experience and our testimony of God’s goodness.

Yeo Hock Seng (Logs HOD) - Thank God for allowing me to serve in VBS. I am very delighted for the 3 days in VBS. We were the young and senior team. Added up together, we were more than 500 yrs old. But none of us was either too young or too senior as we were charged with spiritual “energizer batteries” that kept us chasing for things to accomplish.  All tasks were completed way ahead and on time. We had so many “preemptive strikes” and additional “carpet bombing” to ensure nothing was left out. We were not washed away by the super heavy showers of blessing and we were not melted by the extreme hot sun.

I was looking forward to every day of VBS not just for the kids but for the opportunity to serve with a batch of truly dedicated believers who would go the extra mile for God’s Kingdom. I am not sure if anyone knew that Sonny busted his favourite pair of shoes. His shoes gave up on him but he remained strong. I really don’t know how Henry could manage to differentiate the cars and direct them to the correct spot with his vision challenges. It had to be God working in him. Terrence was firm each time which made the drivers comply.

From afar I thought Victor really looked like a professional gatekeeper with a blue chair next to the gate. I am so blessed to serve in this ministry. Ying Yao never missed any detail by constantly confirming the requirements. He was really awesome! Ignatius and Tiong Chin were always so cool and steady to resolve things quietly and swiftly. Samuel ensured that every detail of his task was done well. Mention must also be made of Wei Lin, Jason, Buay Hock, Tiong Chin, Timothy, Tab, Mag, Joyce and many who volunteered to go forward to ensure all small and big things were done well for the VBS.

Thank God for having Andrew as my partner who did all the planning and ensured proper and adhoc execution of work. He was really good, flexible and yet firm in his planning. He did not compromise on any standards yet he worked with godly intent. I’m very sure the children benefitted from all the hard work. I am also sure they have been brought closer to God’s Kingdom. Thank God for His blessing to complete the VBS safely and as a fruitful gospel event. May God be with us at all times. Thanks so much to Zhong Liang and  team too for the great work in sorting out the PA requirements on two sites, and assisted much in  the Log work. God Bless!

Ong Sue Huey (Teacher) “I had a great and blessed time! Really thank God for His providence in sustaining me through the 3 days, as well as the smooth running of the camp!”

Christina Toh (Teacher) Thank GOD for His goodness to answer prayer in many ways and to see that HE is able to supply manpower for this year VBS. My helper went back home for the holidays and I was puzzled whether I’d be able to help effectively as I tagged along my granddaughter who is two and a half years old. Praise the LORD she enjoyed and mingled well in class  and thank GOD for providing sister Sue Huey to be there too. I also praise the LORD that one child accepted CHRIST. May GOD continue to bless the labour of our hands. Ps 90:17

Sharon Seow (Song Lead/Teacher) “Jesus is a wonderful Savior” was the theme song for VBS 2016 - I experienced the truth that Jesus our wonderful Saviour will carry us through.

He carried us through songs, Bible lessons, memory verses, gospel-sharing, games & crafts. He carried us through changes of plans with a downpour on day 1 and condo fogging on day 2; and provided learning moments for the children who were competitive in games.

It was wonderful interacting with my group’s SCC children together with teacher Mark. I pray that the truth of God’s word will work in their hearts, and more will come for LCC.

It was wonderful singing with the primary department and having Joanna play the piano. Hearing the voices of children and teachers gave me a small glimpse of the praise we will render in heaven - Rev 7:12 “blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.”

Ethan Tan (PA/Logs)- I thank God for the opportunity to serve in VBS this year in PA/Logs. It was a good opportunity to get to know other Lifers and fellowship with them over meals. Serving together definitely helped to forge bonds with other Christians. From this experience, I learnt that we can start serving God in small ways and I would encourage others to join VBS ’17 as helpers.

Laurel Ng (Teacher) During the 2016 VBS, I have witnessed the goodness of God with 2 unique boys in my tribe.  1 very lively and the other, very emotional.

First, the very lively boy will ‘play’ with the Hymn books with total disrespect and throw whatever cards he could lay his hands on, creating commotion most of the time on the first day of VBS in the sanctuary!

God’s mercy is new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22)

But, God loves him just the same. With much prayer, our lively little boy has learnt about God through the hymns in the Hymn book (I saw him drawing beautiful musical notes on the whiteboard) and on the last day, he treated the Hymn book with much respect and told the boy seated behind not to kick the pews! Praise God for His mercy and grace.

In everything give thanks. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

The emotional boy’s mother shared with me that God is so wonderful for He placed the right person in the right place, (his kindergarten) to help diagnose her son’s Sensory Heightened condition. She reminded me that our God is faithful. Praise God.

Indeed, Faith is the Victory!

Judy Fong (Teacher)  I thank God for giving me the opportunity of serving Him in VBS2016. Yes, FAITH IS THE VICTORY. I was down with flu in the past weeks prior to VBS.  With faith and prayers, the Great Physician healed me just three days before VBS.

My class and myself enjoyed every part of the programmes for the three days.  Thumbs up for the organising team.

I also thank God for sending so many SCC children.  I had 11 of them in my class. They were lovable and well behaved. They were very attentive to the Good News sharing during the tribe time. May the gospel be with the children as they grow up. May God be gracious and merciful to the children.

In conclusion, I want to thank God for everything. I am looking forward to serve Him again next year and I encourage more helpers to come forward to experience God’s goodness.
