Why are we here? What is the meaning of life?

Those were perplexing questions that troubled me and gave me nightmares when I was growing up.

I grew up poor. Our family of seven used to squeeze into two tiny rented rooms in a prewar timber shophouse at Jalan Besar. My goal in life then was to study hard, get a good job and get rich. One early morning, a fire broke out and gutted the house.  All residents were safely evacuated.  Looking back, it was a frightening experience.  I could have died.

I was confused and lost. Life seemed so unfair, arbitrary and meaningless. Why do I have to go through stress and many exams to get a job, work hard, and hope for promotion and a “good life.”  What is a good life anyway?  If you’re “lucky,” you get rich and enjoy luxuries, only to succumb to sickness and perhaps an early death. If life consists only of studying, passing exams, working, eating, entertaining, sleeping, retiring, raising children and pushing them to repeat the same cycle, and finally dying, it all seemed so pointless. If this is life, is it really worth the living?

In my second year in NUS, a classmate invited me to join their campus Christian fellowship meeting.  The preacher spoke of a true and living God who loves us, the reality of Satan who opposes us, and after death, the reality of heaven and hell.  He earnestly pleaded with us to believe in Jesus who loves us and died to save us from sin.  It was the first time I heard the full gospel of Jesus Christ.  I was fascinated by Jesus’ noble sacrificial love.  Is it possible that this kind of love really exists in this “dog eat dog” world?  I was beginning to see the truth about life.

I was invited to attend a Bible study, which I gladly did as I wanted answers to my questions.  As I read the Bible, and interacted with my Bible study leader, every one of those questions were answered.  God showed me so clearly that I am a sinner who had rebelled against my Creator. I was bound for hell, condemned forever.  So how can I be saved? Believe in Jesus. It seems too simple.

Look to Jesus.

God says in Isaiah 45:22 “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”  Just look to Jesus. Don’t look elsewhere.

Are you looking to marriage to save you from a miserable life? No, marrying another lost sinner will only compound your problems.

Are you looking to your intelligence and income to save you?  Mark 8:36 says, “For what shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”   What’s the point of having all the income in the whole world? Can your money save you from death?  Can your money and houses wash you from the guilt of sin?  “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither:” (Job 1:21).  After death, we can’t bribe God to forgive our sins, or enjoy our houses in the next world.  Eternal hell fire and torment awaits a sinner.

Are you looking to your good character to save you?  But all men have rebelled against God; all have sinned and come short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).  There is none good, No, not one.

Are you looking to religion to save you? No, Jesus says, going to church or a place of worship five or ten times a week won’t save you. God rejects our religious duties as payment for our sin. The Bible tells us even our best efforts at doing good are but “filthy rags” before God (Isaiah 64:6).

Is sin serious?  Romans 6:23 tells us that the consequences of sin is death - “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

How does God give us eternal life? Romans 5:8 explains that God showed His love toward us by sending Jesus to die for us while we were sinners. He did not wait for us to be “good” before He saves us. The truth is, we could not be good. The only one who could make us good is Jesus.  The Son of God, Jesus Christ, died for you and me on the Cross.  Jesus died to pay the penalty of my sin, and your sins, past, present and future. All our sins were laid upon Christ. When Jesus cried out “It is finished!” He has completed the work of saving us. Jesus’ resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus’ death as the payment for our sins.

How can I be saved from my sins?  Romans 10:9 tells us that if we would verbally confess Jesus as our Lord, and sincerely believe in our heart that God had raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved.   You mean it’s that simple? Just believe? Yes, Jesus has paid it all, all I need to do is believe in what Jesus has done for me.  He died on the Cross for you and me.

How can I be sure?

Romans 10:13  “For whosoever [insert your name here] shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Again, in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever [insert your name here] believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”   If you earnestly seek Christ, you can be saved.

Welma was a Filipina domestic worker in Singapore – a single mum with little education and little future from the perspective of the world. Through a gospel tract, she read John 3:16.  She could not forget the word “whosoever.”  It dawned on her that even a poor servant like her was loved by God, and included in the worldwide word “whosoever.”  By faith, she believed in Jesus.

If you will believe in Jesus, you will be included in the “whosoever.” Just insert your name in the brackets of the two verses, John 3:16 and Romans 10:13.

So what’s the big deal about being saved?  We have peace with our Creator, because Jesus has paid for my sins.  “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” Romans 5:1.  Many in this world have no peace - hearts full of hatred, resentment, bitterness, anger, conflicts and revenge.  Peace can only come when Jesus comes into your heart.  “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1.

No more condemnation because Jesus had been condemned for me on the cross. God does not demand a second payment for my sin.  God says, “though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” Isaiah 1:18.

As the hymnwriter, Elvina M. Hall, wrote,

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe,
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Why would the Almighty Creator do this?  Because God is love.  God loves me, so He gave Himself for me. Love is an act of sacrifice for the object of love.  Jesus had great compassion. He went everywhere loving and caring for the poor, the needy, the sick, the social outcasts, and the enslaved. But Jesus is more than just a good man. He is the Son of God. Everywhere He went, He performed miracles that only God could do: the lame could walk, the blind could see, and the dead was raised to life.

I realised I was a sinner who had rebelled against a Holy God.  My sins - pride, anger, hatred, selfishness, lies, lusts - condemn me to hell.  God knows all the sins I have committed. I cannot escape God’s judgment.  But God so loved me that He gave His only begotten Son, so that I, who have believed in Jesus should not suffer in hell, but have everlasting life!  What an exchange!  His life for mine. I believed in Jesus. I was born-again!  Joy flooded my soul.

Now God offers this gift of eternal life to you. Have you believed?

Why not? Come to Jesus today!  The Christian faith offers the truth about the source of wars, sickness, and wickedness in this world.  More importantly, it offers the only solution to man’s problem of sin. Life is meaningless without Jesus.  We are not supposed to live without Jesus. That’s why a life without Him is miserable.

I finally understood the purpose of my life – I was created by God to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to love Him, to worship and serve Him.  I belong to Jesus. I cannot live without Jesus. Once I knew the truth, and have tasted the goodness of Jesus, I never wanted the counterfeit gods of the world.  I want to follow Jesus as my master (Lord) all the days of my life.

If you would like to receive Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, talk to the pastor or counselor today. Pray this prayer to God sincerely from your heart:  God, I admit I am a sinner. I have rebelled against you. I do not deserve to be saved. I cannot save myself.  But I thank you for opening my eyes to know that only Jesus saves. Thank you for loving me and sending Jesus to die for my sins. God, I believe Jesus died for me.  I believe Jesus’ blood can wash away all my sins. I believe that Jesus died, was buried and rose on the third day. I want to receive Jesus as my Saviour and Lord.  Thank you for loving and saving me. Wash me white as snow, help me to be a faithful follower of Jesus, for I pray in Jesus name.

Join a Bible-believing church. Faithfully attend Sunday worship and Bible study so that you can grow in your relationship with Jesus.
