Christians have the bright prospect of going to Heaven, of having life beyond the grave, of spending eternity with God, of reunion with departed loved ones, of being delivered from sickness, sadness, sorrow, aches and pains. Heaven is the Home of the believing soul – the Home that Jesus has gone to prepare. Our Lord Jesus declared: “In My Father’s House are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (Jn 14:2). This will be our eternal home. Let us look forward to that home without fear and foreboding but with hope and joyous anticipation. What is Heaven like?

1.    The Government of Heaven – God is the King and Lord of Heaven. “The LORD hath prepared His Throne in the Heavens; and His Kingdom ruleth over all” (Ps 103:19). “The LORD is King for ever and ever” (Ps 10:16). Heaven is “a city which hath foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God” (Heb 11:10). Christians who serve the Lord faithfully on Earth will also minister in Heaven. “They shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years” (Rev 20:4,6).

2.    Climate in Heaven – The climate is pleasant. The water is pure, the city is green and the streets are clean. The Apostle John wrote: “He shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the Throne of God and of the Lamb. On either side of the river, was…the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing [soothing] of the nations” (Rev 22:1,2).

3.    Crime Rate in Heaven – There will be no crime in Heaven. “There shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie” (Rev 21:27). “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Rev 21:8). The city is so safe that “the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day” (21:25) for there shall be no night there!

4.    Inhabitants of Heaven – The angels will be there. “I beheld and I heard the voice of many angels round about the Throne…ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” (Rev5:11). Blood-bought believers in Christ will also be there. “A great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the Throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands” (7:9). “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy…and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (5:9). No tourists will be there. Heaven is not for those who just want to come and “look-see.” Only migrants who have received the Lord Jesus as personal Saviour and who are registered permanent residents having booked their homes in advance will be there.

5.    Activity in Heaven. Heaven will be filled with praises.

      a) By the four living creatures. “And the four beasts [living creatures]…rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come” Rev 4:8.

      b) By the 24 elders. “The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev 4:10,11).

      c) By all created being. “Every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Rev 5:13).

6.    Accommodation in Heaven – Many mansions available but only by reservation. You must plan ahead and prepare. No one gets to Heaven by mistake or by a “fluke shot”. No one “stumbles” into Heaven accidentally, or chances upon Heaven without fore-thought. Our Lord Jesus said, “In my Father’s House are many mansions…I go to prepare a place for you”  (Jn 14:2). The accommodation is “incorruptible, and undefiled…reserved in Heaven for you” (1 Pet 1:4).

7.    Passport & Visa To Heaven – No passport or visa is required. However, the decision to go and the registration for Heaven must be made on Earth. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Heb 9:27). “There shall in no wise enter into it [Heaven] any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Rev 21:27). Once death takes place, there is no second chance. There can be no appeal or concession by the living relatives on our behalf.

8.    Time of Departure – Exact date not announced. Known only to God. “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of Heaven, but My Father only” (Matt 24:36). Travellers are to be ready to take off at short notice. “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power” (Acts 1:7). “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matt 24:42,44).

9.    Luggage – No accompanying luggage allowed. Nothing to check in. “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 Tim 6:7). Job said, “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the Name of the LORD” (Job 1:21).

10.  Health Papers – No injections, vaccinations or inoculations are necessary. No expiry date on your current jabs. No health papers required. Come as you are. Will not be barred from entry for health reasons. “There shall be no more death, neither…any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Rev 21:4).

11.  Absent From Heaven – “There shall be no more curse” (Rev 22:3), “no night there”. They need “no candle, neither light of the sun” (22:5), “no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither …pain” (21:4), “no temple” (21:22), “…no need of the sun, neither of the moon” (21:23). All negative emotions excluded. All light emitters and reflectors also.

12.  Excluded From Heaven – “The fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Rev 21:8). “And there shall in no wise enter into it [Heaven] any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie” (21:27). Heaven is a wholesome place.

The question is:

“And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”
(Rev 22:17)
