HELPING COVENANT B-P CHURCH IN PERTH

Nearly seven years ago a group of forty brethren in Perth, Western Australia, started meeting together at a home for fellowship and worship led by Rev Dr Edward Paauwe. As this group eventually grew to over a hundred, they started renting the premises of Attadale Baptist Church in the afternoon slot and decided to form a new Bible-Presbyterian Church. Elder Sherman Ong was seconded as a borrowed elder from Life Church to assist them in the initial phase of the formation of this new church.

By God’s grace, Covenant B-P Church held its inaugural service attended by 153 people on 14 March 2010. I preached to them from 2 Peter 1:1-4 on “His Promises, Our Faith.” Rev Paauwe and the church interim committee led the service in giving thanks to God for His greatness and goodness to His covenant people.

By that time, the Lord had blessed Covenant Bible-Presbyterian Church with a group of committed leaders, talented musicians, Sunday School teachers, a Junior Fellowship, and a Young People’s Fellowship. The members were predominantly Asian (Australians who originated from Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Sri Lanka) and at least two white Australian families. The Singaporeans included some Lifers who had migrated to Perth.

God’s Provision of a New Pastor

In view of Rev Paauwe’s intention to retire by the end of 2012, the Session of Covenant B-P Church extended a call in October 2011 to brother Mark Chen to become their next Pastor. After more than a month of praying to seek the Lord’s will on this, brother Mark Chen who was then our Youth worker, accepted the call. He wrote about this to our pastors and elders, “I believe the Lord has led me to accept their call. It is with mixed feelings that I inform you. I will miss Life Church and her members, having ministered in her midst for almost 10 years, but I look forward to my future ministry. The decision was not easy for me to make… I am humbled by the situation in which I find myself. I also know that there are far better men than me to do this work. It is with fear and trepidation that I embark on this next phase of ministry, but I am much strengthened and assured knowing that the Lord has led thus far.”

Subsequently, Rev Mark Chen was ordained as a minister of the Gospel on 16 September 2012. The ordination service, which took place in Life B-P Church, was presided by a council consisting of Rev Dr Edward Paauwe, Rev Peter Chng, Rev Colin Wong and me. Ten days later, Rev Mark Chen and his family left for Perth. He was installed as an Assistant Pastor at Covenant B-P Church on 25 November 2012 at a worship service which also saw the ordination of Elder Jimmy Orchard, the church’s first elder.

Since Rev & Mrs Paauwe relocated to Adelaide in South Australia in May 2013, Rev Mark Chen has been shepherding the congregation. Besides preaching at the worship service of Covenant B-P Church on Sunday afternoon, he also ministers twice a month to the congregation of Attadale Baptist Church on Sunday morning.

God’s Provision of a Property

The symbiotic relationship that exists between these two congregations eventually led to the latter offering its church property for purchase to Covenant B-P Church. After 60 years of service, the Attadale Baptist Church had decided to dissolve due to its diminishing numbers and its ageing membership. Her church board met with the Session of Covenant B-P Church on 28 February 2015 to offer them first right to purchase the church building and the manse which is only a minute’s walk away from the church. They did this in order to continue the Bible-believing witness in the Attadale area, and also to provide a place for their remaining members to worship after the dissolution.

The offer price was AUD1 million for the church property and AUD750,000 for the manse. A recent valuation by an Australian property firm revealed that the land the church sits on is worth AUD1.642 million, while the church building on it is worth AUD1.3 million. Hence the total value of the church property alone is nearly AUD3 million.

At an Extraordinary Congregational Meeting held on 29 March 2015 the members of Covenant B-P Church voted to raise funds to meet the purchase price. They have been renting the premises for the past six years. Owning it would save them the monthly rent payment of AUD1,000 and enable them to move their worship service to Sunday morning.

In a letter to Life B-P Church to appeal for gifts, Elder Jimmy Orchard wrote, “Our worshipers will be giving and pledging to this building fund. We will call them to dig deep. In all honesty, in our local context and circumstances, it will be difficult for 130 worshipers, of which a quarter or less are wage earners, to raise that amount on our own. While we go by faith, we are also asking for gifts from sister churches and the brethren.”

Attadale Baptist Church has suggested that September 2015 would be a suitable date to effect the purchase as they would be celebrating their 60th anniversary then. As of 19 July 2015 the members of Covenant B-P Church have raised almost AUD460,000 with approximately AUD100,000 remaining in pledges to be given. Zion Serangoon B-P Church has given a gift of SGD30,000.

In view of this need, the Session of Life B-P Church has decided to offer Covenant B-P Church an interest-free loan of AUD300,000, repayable within ten years. The offer was gladly accepted with thanks to Life Church and the sum was transferred to Perth on 23 July. If the Lord provides another AUD110,000 to Covenant B-P Church within the next few weeks, it would have sufficient funds to purchase the church property.

In the Covenant B-P Church weekly dated 19 July 2015, Rev Mark Chen wrote: “Pray for a meeting of minds and hearts. God-willing, we will be meeting with the church board of Attadale Baptist Church in early August to discuss the details of the sale and purchase of the building. When we first met, we discussed the proposed purchase price of both church building and church manse. Unless things change significantly in the next few weeks, we are likely to discuss the purchase of only the church building. We will also be discussing the timing of the purchase and the handing over of the property to us. The members of Attadale Baptist Church have been praying for this for a long time and so have their officers. We have been told that they would like it to take place at their 60th anniversary in September. Please be in fervent prayer for this meeting, that there would be a meeting of minds and hearts – that Christ would be exalted above all.”

How You Can Help

Please pray for them. If the Lord moves your heart to give toward this worthy cause, you may designate your offering to “Covenant B-P Church Building Fund” and hand it to our church treasurer, Dn Charlie Chan, or place it in the offering bag during our worship service. Because of the fluctuating exchange rate all interest-free loans will be accounted for in Sing$.

We thank God for giving us this opportunity to be of help to our like-minded brethren in Perth. Covenant B-P Church has great potential to be used by Him for His glory, as the city has five universities and there are many international students to reach out to, besides the constant stream of migrants from many Asian countries. If you know of anyone who is planning to visit Perth, study or migrate there, please recommend this church to them. Covenant B-P Church meets for worship at 3:00 pm every Lord’s Day at 47 Davis Road, Attadale, Western Australia.                        —Pastor
