VBS 2015 TESTIMONIES

Dn Benedict Sim – VBS Director 2015

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Thank God for sending 260 children to VBS listening to God’s words, and for providing 105 helpers to run the VBS. The VBS helpers took time off from their busy schedule and annual leave from work to be with the children, only for the very fact that they love God very much and want to proclaim God’s mighty works to the children and the good news of Jesus salvation, who is our Lord and Savior.

Thank God for our Church Pastors, Leaders, and members of the church who are united at heart for VBS, especially the FEK and SCC teachers who supported by inviting the children. We had many returning graduated children from FEK joining us, and of course the students from SCC too. It was a family affair as we see many Life families coming together to serve, and FEK families sending their children to VBS. We shared about Jesus’ love towards His children of Israel, freeing them from the bondage of Egypt through Moses. It was a Bible encounter turned alive as the sea parted along the corridors of Beulah Center. The children and staff had a wonderful experience walking through the wall of sea, left and right, awed by the underwater world in Beulah.

Teachers and children turned Israelites as they travelled from point to point, collecting manna and water under the sunny weather, with God being the cloud by day, likened as tents erected to provide shade and shelter. Thank God for the cheerful and dedicated VBS helpers who came to be tribe leaders, game masters, traffic marshals, SCC staff, FEK staff coordinators, décor designers, logistic helpers, and logistic needs contributors who heard the call and received the challenge to serve Christ to have His ….

Parents of the children were very excited, coming as early as 7.15am, awaiting eagerly to commence VBS. Parents were very supportive, who brought their children and even friends of their children. It is the almighty hands of our Lord who have moved all to come for VBS.

Day 1 - God is with us, so … trust God!

Verse: “And he said, Certainly I will be with thee.” (Ex 3:12a)

Story: The Israelites Cross the Red Sea (Ex 14:1 – 15:21)

Day 2 - God gives us what we need, so … trust God!

Verse: “…for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him” (Matt 6:8b)

Story: God provides manna and quail (Ex 16)

Day 3 - God guides us, so … trust God!

Verse: “I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel” (Ps 16:7)

Story: God gives the Ten Commandments (Ex 20)

The game team was provided by God at the most apt time, churning out exciting games re-enforcing the gospel message and the daily themed learning.

The craft team contributed tremendous amount of time, effort and dedication, creating the craft materials, packed and all ready for the 24 tribes of children each day, 12 tribes each from junior and primary. Did I mention the craft team is also our decoration team? One team churning out two titanic roles and deliveries, they are all fired up for Jesus and His children, ready to go! The decor team turned Beulah into a festive place as we celebrate God’s victory through the three days of each theme each day, where God Guides & Provides!

What can we do without the strength and energy of our youths? They were breathtaking as they worked hard through the week, from pre to post VBS, supporting the occasion with all their strength, maintaining the cleanliness.

It was also a mentoring session as we see even more adults coming this year to lead, guide and share their experience with love to the younger folks such as getting more things accomplished with less, even more effectively and efficiently.

We had an excellent time of tract giving session to the parents and children, and we sincerely pray that all will come to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The song leaders were very inspiring and motivating as they prepared the children with carefully handpicked songs, creatively having the children and volunteers engaged and hearts and minds ready for the story.

Our highly imaginative storytellers came all ready with their homemade props, staff and sandals. It was a blast from the past as they led the children along the stories each day. I can tell it’s exhausting but they were persevering. Praise the Lord.

F&B highlights was with their lovingly baked cupcakes with toppings of cloud and fire, reminding our children and helpers of our all-caring God who was cloud by day and fire by night.

In conclusion, if I’m asked what three things I can testify from our Almighty living and breathing God, firstly I would surely quote the VBS theme “God guides and provides” for His people. We lacked nothing despite all the constraints and challenges abounding all around us during VBS.

Secondly, we were concerned and anxious how things would work out by Neh 8:10 – we continued our way, pressed on and this VBS is indeed unto our Lord. We were reminded not to be sorry or feel worried… why? The joy of the Lord is our strength! So we proceeded by looking to God, our provider each step of the way, enjoying the journey of VBS.

Finally, even as the children of Israel wandered 40 years in the wilderness where their clothes and shoes were not worn, so is our VBS which by the grace of God, has persisted year after year.

Sustained by God himself, indeed we know that way that the name “I AM”, is the Lord our God (Deut 29:6)

All glory be to our great God who provided for the VBS.

Tan Ling Ling - Juniors Department

“My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,

All I have to do is follow.

My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,

All I have to do is follow.

Strength for today is mine all the way,

And all I need for tomorrow.

My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,

All I have to do is follow.”

As the lyrics of our VBS theme song “My Lord Knows the Way through the Wilderness” go, the Lord had directed our path as we planned and conducted “Wilderness Escape VBS 2015”.  I vividly remembered as I walked out of the first VBS Committee meeting, my mind was blown away by this new VBS format that was drastically different from previous VBS.   It was experiential, fun, yet at the same time, required a lot of manpower as well as teamwork and coordination across many departments.   I was doubtful if I could take on the task of planning for VBS.

Yet the Lord proved His power and His providence to us over and over again, from guiding us every step of our way to moving the hearts of fellow brethren to co-labor with us. Even at the eleventh hour, we had new volunteers signing up to serve in one way or another!  It is our Almighty God who had brought the Israelites through the wilderness in times past, and now, this same God also saw us through the entire VBS.  As a result, we could experience the wonderful privilege of serving Him and witnessing His divine providence.  Indeed, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)

Over the course of these few months, my heart was warmed and encouraged by many who came forward to serve out of their love for Christ. It is truly a blessed and enriching experience to serve alongside Lifers whom I was not familiar with in the beginning, but have since forged closer bonds with through serving in VBS together.  Personally, I have gained much from their insightful suggestions and enjoyed their fellowship, not to mention touched by their zeal and diligence in their service to God.

Although VBS 2015 had come to a closure, I believe that God will continue His work in the children’s hearts. It is our prayer that not one of the children who had attended VBS would be lost in the wilderness but each and every one should come to the knowledge of Christ and enter the Promised Land of God!

Deanna Heng – Primary Tribe Lead

My original role in this year’s Vacation Bible School was that of a Games Master. Truthfully, I was so swamped with all my Final Year Project commitments that Elise, my co-games master, organised and prepared most of the games and proposals. Consequently, I mostly reviewed and fine-tuned the administrative tasks and assisted with purchasing the VBS Games prizes. Having entered the committee at an advanced stage of the planning process, I frequently got things muddled up and am deeply appreciative of having worked with such a kind partner who patiently entertained my initial flurry of questions. There were simply too many things which required attention, such as the preparation of the VBS décor, furnishings and art and craft supplies, optimising logistics, ensuring that there were sufficient VBS prizes for each child, urgently seeking more Lifers for their assistance and the list goes on…

The games committee initially consisted of a dismal number of three persons which included Elise and myself. How were we going to do this?! It was a comical yet depressing revelation – the lack of manpower was clearly evident across most departments and the ‘teaching department’ was no exception. There was a rush to recruit Lifers into whatever position they were willing to assist in to facilitate planning and very often the response was discouraging. However, God answered our prayers in His own perfect timing and several Lifers came forward to serve. The games committee eventually grew to a very comfortable number of eight persons, having enough manpower to carry out the games for all three days!

Unfortunately, there was still a considerable lack of tribe leaders i.e. class teachers (children were grouped into ‘tribes’) and Deacon Benedict had asked me if I could find youths who were willing to serve in this area. I believe most youths, including myself, find teaching a very daunting task. What if I am unable to answer the child’s question? What if I am at a loss for words? What if I say something wrong? (Mark 9:42Although I was already a Games Master, I felt prompted to serve as a tribe leader as well and discussed with Elise regarding this possibility. Interestingly, more youths were offering their help in the VBS games at this point in time and hence my switch to becoming an assistant tribe leader was almost seamless.

The entire job as an assistant tribe leader for the P1-2 children was an exhausting but highly rewarding one. I had almost no experience with children and was overwhelmed by their sheer number and hyperactivity. I fell sick on the morning of the second day possibly due to stress, but thankfully recovered sufficiently to carry on with what I had to do. I knew I could not do this on my own and required God’s strength and wisdom to manage the children lovingly and in a controlled manner. Moreover, there was also a great (GREAT) temptation to curry favour with the children – I mean, who would not like being a favourite among the kids? However, I recalled attending one of Aunty Poh Yok’s talks in the past on handling and disciplining children and I knew that was not the way to go – VBS was about directing these precious children towards Christ.

I had thought that being firm in my role would ‘repel’ the children or cause them to dislike me. Instead, the children began to listen more attentively, continued to volunteer their thoughts enthusiastically and showed more respect to my fellow tribe leader Hannah and I. I did not expect such a response given that this was my first time practising what I had learnt from Aunty Poh Yok’s talk. Having set boundaries for the children, they were able to learn things more effectively in a comfortable environment. And what really reassured us of what we were doing was when one of the girls gave us a handmade gift each on the third day of VBS!

I know that all of this was possible because our God answers prayers. From the planning stages to the execution, He was there to prompt the hearts of Lifers to serve, grant the committee the strength to account for every detail and hopefully open the hearts of the children to receive Jesus into their lives. I am thankful for this opportunity to serve God and look forward to serving in VBS next year!

Amy Chang – HOD Primary

I was assistant teacher in Junior for the past 6 years. It’s definitely a challenge to be Primary HOD. Thank God as He had provided guidance and helps through past HOD and the committee members.

Thank God for VBS!!

Isaac Sim – 8 yr old

I like VBS because it is fun, educational and cool. I have learnt from the VBS how the Israelites crossed the Red sea, how God provided manna, food and water, and also the Ten Commandments. I will like to come for VBS again because I like it very much.

Samuel Sim – 11 yr old

This is the first year that I didn’t attend VBS, so I could help freely. However, this year was very different from the past few years as we had tents on the outside. It was good to serve God in the VBS and I have learnt many things, including a detailed Moses story. I hope I can help again next year!

Linda Listiyani – Junior Tribe Lead

Privilege is mine to serve the Almighty and Holy God. Thank God for being able to be involved and witness His love displayed in the hearts of many brethren and sisters for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many children. I was reminded by this verse during VBS: We love because He first loved us

(1John 4:19) Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Sharon Seow – Primary Song Lead and Tribe Lead

“Hallelujah”- Praise the Lord for a wonderful time at VBS.

It was a joy to lead the tribes in song, to hear the multi-media story told by Arthur “Moses” Wong, and see many youths step up as tribe leaders. The costumes, games, craft & deco were fun & creative. 5 children of 3 friends invited for VBS really enjoyed themselves learning God’s word through the activities & the care of teachers. May God continue to bless this evangelistic ministry.

Charmaine Wan Lee – Junior Tribe Lead

I thank the Lord that I was able to attend my first VBS in the longest time, while my 2 kids are seasoned VBS attendees! I had the privilege to serve in the Junior department and it was indeed an eye-opening experience for me. The joy in serving is evident in everyone.

My first impression during the helpers’ briefing was the extent of the elaboration with the costumes. Ladies Fellowship spent months preparing the tribal costumes so that we can have a costume party!

During the three days of VBS, I was truly amazed how each department knows exactly what to do. The whole event was wonderfully planned and I could truly see the months of preparation work materializing. Of course, amidst all the ‘hardware’, we should not forget the ‘heart-ware’, which is the key objective of VBS, i.e. to convert souls. The children were brought back in time to the days of Moses and saw how God led His people out of Egypt into the wilderness, how He was with the Israelites when He parted the Red Sea, leading them with the pillar of cloud by day and column of fire by night, how He provided food for them when they hungered and eventually giving them the Ten Commandments.

After 3 days with the children, I am reminded of the child-like faith that God wants from us, to trust in Him for our every need. He is the same God who did all those miracles and gave us the promise of eternal Heaven, shouldn’t we trust Him even for today?

Luke 12:29-31 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Thanksgiving and appreciation from VBS Parents

I would like to convey my heartfelt appreciation to you and your committee and all the youth and volunteers who gave of your precious time and efforts so that our children could enjoy the VBS. I would like to appreciate the church too for her generosity in organizing VBS bi-annually. Raphael loves attending VBS and on the last day, he expressed his sadness that it was over. He remembers what was taught and the crafts he brought back were lovely. I was delighted to see the lovely photo he brought home on Friday too :) Thanks so much and may God bless and water all of you as you have blessed and watered into the lives of our young ones. - Blessings Jo-Ann

A big thank you to VBS Team and all the staff from the church for your wonderful work and organization of the camp. Thank you for teaching and taking good care of our daughter, Nicole Yeo. She shared with us that she had great time learning, playing the games and doing the activities such as making muffins. She enjoys singing the theme song taught in the camp. We will join you again next year. Please kindly send us a notice of next year’s VBS. - Thank you Mrs Sarah Yeo

Thank you everyone for taking time to organize this camp. Praise and thank God for what you are doing through this camp. - Pauline

Thank you for a fabulous camp. My daughter Elizabeth Yong enjoyed herself tremendously. - Lina Tan

Thank you to the organizing team of VBS 2015. My son, Ethan Ng of K2, had a wonderful time and learnt more about God during the three-day program. Regards, Suvie Khong
