THE EXTENSION OF CHRIST’S KINGDOM AMONG GIRLS

Life B-P Church is the sponsoring church for the 13th Girls Brigade Company. However, many of us may not know much about this ministry of our church.

First, you may want to know what Girls’ Brigade is. Here is a little history. It was formed in 1893 at Sandymount Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Ireland, founded on the twin pillars of Bible Class and Physical Training. Its aim was the extension of Christ’s Kingdom among girls. It was a sister organisation of the Boys Brigade which had been formed 10 years earlier (1883, in Glasgow, Scotland).

Today, the Girls’ Brigade (GB) has become an international and interdenominational Christian uniformed youth organisation for girls. There are GB companies in over 60 countries worldwide. GB seeks to help girls to become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility to find true enrichment of life. Its Motto is: “Seek, Serve and Follow Christ.”

In Singapore, the GB started 87 years ago. At first, only Christian schools had GB companies. It was only in the 1980s that government schools started to have GB companies. The last 21 years has seen GB companies formed in 60 schools, bringing the present number of companies to 86 with more than 4,000 members.

The Girls’ Brigade and the Boys Brigade are the only two overtly Christian CCAs allowed in local schools. Recognised by the Ministry of Education of Singapore as a Co-Curricular Activity in the schools, its mission is to help girls develop to their fullest potential imbued with good Christian values, equipped with leadership skills and challenged to serve at home, in the local community and overseas.

One of these GB companies is the 13th Company. It was started in 2001 in Sembawang Secondary School through the efforts of the school’s first principal. Its teacher-in-charge and GB Captain is Ms Fong Yuen Han (known to many of us as sister Wanxian), who is also a member of Life Church. The company’s strength is presently 42 girls (13-17 years old) and three school teachers. Its meetings are held at 2:30 – 5:30 pm on Wednesdays. Its weekly programme consists of singspiration, Christian devotions, games/drills, badgework and coaching of the squads and student leaders.

The 13th GB company was almost closed down in October 2011 due to the withdrawal of support by its former sponsoring church and a low enrolment of 13 girls. Sister Wanxian prayed that the company would not be closed down, and in October 2012 she asked Life Church to consider sponsoring it. The matter was brought up to our Board of Elders for consideration. After praying and deliberating, we decided to take up the role of sponsoring this company.

One of the reasons for this is the location of the school. It is quite close to Yishun where we already have an effective ministry to children through our Student Care Ministry and Life Children’s Club. Perhaps some of our SCC and LCC students may be posted to Sembawang Secondary School in years to come.

Besides that, we are not the first B-P Church to sponsor a GB company. New Life Bible-Presbyterian Church has sponsored the 79th GB company since 2007, besides sponsoring a Boys Brigade company. The results of this ministry had been very encouraging – many of the students started attending New Life B-P Church and some have been baptised. It has proven to be a good way to reach out to the lost with the Gospel.

After the decision was made, our sponsorship of the 13th GB company began on 30 April last year with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Life Church and the Girls’ Brigade Singapore. The Girls’ Brigade was represented by its Deputy Brigade Commissioner, Ms Evangeline Chong, who is familiar with Life Church because she attended our church kindergarten (FEK) when she was young. In fact, on the day we signed the MoU, Ms Chong had come down earlier to help with the FEK anniversary celebration on that day!

What is our role as a sponsoring church? Firstly: To provide support for the spiritual aspects of the company. This is done through sharing devotions from the Scriptures during weekly meetings and overnight camps, conducting lessons for Spiritual badgework, and organising meaningful activities at Christmas and Easter. The theme for this year’s devotions are ‘Women in the Bible.’ In line with this theme, the company has renamed their three squads: Deborah, Ruth and Esther.

Secondly: To conduct an annual enrolment service in April every year – for the pledge-taking by the new recruits and officers of the company. Please come and support our first GB enrolment service which will be held in our Church Sanctuary at 11:00 am on Saturday, 5th April 2014. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know the students and their parents. If you are able to come, please register on-line at www.lifebpc.com/gbrsvp.htm by 29 March 2014 as lunch will be provided.

Thirdly: To provide financial support – about $2,000 a year. This is two-thirds of the company’s budget. The remaining one-third is paid from funds raised by the students for the company’s activities. One of the ways that they raise funds is through donation cards during GB fortnight in July. During last year’s GB fortnight about 25 students came to Life church to attend our worship service. After the service we helped them to fill up their donation cards and they responded by giving each donor a hand-written note of appreciation. Let us make use of the opportunity to encourage them when they attend our worship service at this year’s GB fortnight which is on 13 July.

We have been helping the 13th GB company in other ways besides these. Our LTFers have been friendly hosts to them for events held in church and they also helped to promote GB to the Sec 1 students during their recruitment drive in January. Some of our church ladies helped them to communicate in dialects when they did some community work at a home for senior citizens. Others have taught them skills like balloon sculpting and scrapbooking. As the GB girls prepared for their National Drill Competition on 15 March, a father and son team went down to help them improve their marching skills.

For the rest of this year, Lifers will be going down to give guitar, baking and first aid lessons. If you would like to help, kindly write in to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If you are unable to help in these or other ways, we ask you to support this ministry with prayer…

1. Pray that the students in the 13th GB company will respond to the Word of God and grow in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and man (Luke 2:52).

2. Pray that we will maximise the opportunities to reach out to the non-Christian students and their families with the Gospel of Christ.

3. Pray for Lifers who are available to befriend the students and support the ministry by teaching skills and sharing.

May the Lord Jesus who is our Divine Captain find us faithful in doing His work while the door is still open, as echoed by the words of the Girls Brigade Vesper…

Captain Divine, Our work is now complete

And ere we part, We gather at Thy feet

To give our labours and ourselves to Thee

Without reserve, Thy cause to serve.

O Captain hear us as we pledge to be

True to our creed, in thoughts and deeds.
