Reaching the Migrant Workers

"If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?" (Proverbs 24:11-12)

In Singapore, based on the statistics given by the MOM (http://www.mom.gov.sg/statistics-publications/others/statistics/Pages/ForeignWorkforceNumbers.aspx), the number of foreign workers is slightly more than 1.2 million, and from this figure about 290,000 are construction workers. The numbers are huge and I believe it is an opportunity that the Lord has set for us to reach out to these migrant workers. We may not be able to go to a foreign field to do missionary work but the Lord has brought them to our doorstep. If we neglect or ignore such an opportunity, how are we going to answer the Lord on the judgment day (the bema seat of Christ)?

Work Permit (Construction)

The Ministry of Manpower has recognized the large influx of foreign workers in Singapore. Hence, in order to keep these foreign workers happy, they have set up a few recreation centers for these workers to relax, to meet friends, to purchase necessities, to remit money back home and etc.

The center is run by the Singapore Contractors Association Limited (SCAL) Recreation Centre in Soon Lee Road in Jurong. The facility has a football field, multi-purpose halls and courts, an amphitheater for screening ethnic movies, a beer garden, classrooms, a supermarket, a food court, a clinic and even a post office and remittance services. It caters to about 35,000 foreign workers living in the Soon Lee industrial estate.

Pasir Panjang Christ Church has initiated some church members to do this outreach in one of these recreation centers. This year, they began by having a health screening. The purpose of this health screening was to draw the crowd to the meeting place. It is to allow the church members and foreign workers to interact. They organized a medical team consisting of doctors, medic, nurses and volunteers to get the ball rolling. They prepared a lot of gospel tracts, some small gifts (vitamins pack, etc), and visitor forms to record the workers’ particulars. The health screening went on for two Sundays because the response was so good that they could not finish it in one night. It also gave time for more people to come and be aware of the project. It was a good strategy and they were able to make friends and share the gospel with the migrant workers. They did not conduct any Gospel preaching but shared the gospel on a personal basis.

After medical screening, they continued with the English classes. They divided the workers into various groups according to their level of English proficiency and each group has about 5 persons. The purpose of the classes was to allow the volunteers to know these workers personally. This also enabled the gospel to be shared more effectively. The English class program lasted for about 3 months and many become friends. Those students who have finished their English class will have a graduation ceremony in the Church. The Church has set aside a Saturday evening to hold a graduation ceremony for these students and there will be a gospel message included. Thank the Lord for these few months of evangelistic work as many souls have heard the Gospel and have accepted the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour. Some of them are attending church service.

Besides wining souls to the Lord, we also witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit in the members’ lives. Before this evangelistic project, many members testified that their Christian walk with God was weak and their spiritual growth was stagnant. Many were just Sunday churchgoers. After they were involved in this project, their faith was strengthened and revived. They began to pray for the salvation of these unsaved ones and look forward to serve in this ministry every Sunday evening. They witnessed how their hearts were thrilled when they brought someone into the kingdom of God.

What can Life BP Church do?

1. We can collaborate with Pasir Panjang Christ Church in this project. This will allow us to observe, learn and prepare ourselves to embark on this ministry on our own, if the Lord is willing. Rev. Joshua suggested we could rotate with them, and even work independently under their arrangement.

2. After we are ready to start on our own, we can go to other recreation centres that are nearer to our Church location.

We are going to start a work among these migrant workers in the month of July. We need many volunteers and I beseech you to join us in this great work. There will be a meeting for those who are interested to know more. Please come:

Brethren, the Bible says: "knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed." (Rom 13:11) The night will soon be over and Christ our Lord is coming soon, we must do the work which the Lord has committed to us. Untold millions are still untold, "say not ye, there are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together." (John 4:35-36) Would you heed the words of our Lord and enter into His vineyard and join us in this outreach to the migrant workers? For more queries, you are welcome to contact me.
