"Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh." (James 5:8)

John chapter 14 is a continuation of the Lord Jesus Christ’s discourse with the disciples after supper. Our Lord Jesus Christ had just exposed Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, and the rest of the disciples were full of sorrow upon hearing what the Lord Jesus Christ had just revealed to them. Hence, the focus of the Lord Jesus Christ at this point in time was to comfort and calm the disciples.

Frequent communion with the Lord Jesus Christ is greatly beneficial for us. We are like sheep who had gone astray. We need to listen to the soft prompting of the gracious Lord Jesus Christ to comfort and direct our footsteps each day. Hence, it will always do us good to keep our daily appointment with the Lord and to seek an audience with the King of kings and the Lord of lords patiently.

At this point, the Lord Jesus Christ offered the disciples hope with these words:

"In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know." (John 14:2-4)

In essence, the Lord Jesus Christ was telling the disciples that the separation will be short-lived! Our Lord Jesus Christ must go and prepare the heavenly mansions for us. He is coming again! This is the Hope of every Christian – to meet with the Lord Jesus Christ face-to-face one day. What a great assurance this is. It is even more pertinent for us to remind ourselves of this great Hope in Christ at a time like ours.

The Lord told us that heaven is a "house". In other words, it is a real place and a real ‘home’ for believers. This house has many mansions enough for all saints. Imagine the poverty-stricken countries in the world today where many are still living without a roof over their heads. The Lord says, I am going to prepare you a mansion to dwell in forever.

Heaven is also a place of security because God is there! Look at the spread of terrorism in the world today where safety is perpetually compromised. Our Lord Jesus Christ promises us a safe home in heaven.

Every Christian should be grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ for going away to prepare these heavenly mansions for us. We do not have to work for them, and we do not need to take home loans to purchase them. They will be free for us in that day! In the midst of sorrow and confusion, the Lord Jesus says He is coming again to receive us unto Himself one day.

Jesus’ coming is imminent – Are you ready?

How do we make sure that we secure a place in this heavenly home?

What must we do to prepare ourselves for the Lord Jesus’ imminent return?

When will it take place?

Now that we have established the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ’s imminent return from His own words in John 14, we need to answer the above-mentioned four questions.

Are you ready?

The Apostle James wrote to the persecuted Christians in his concluding chapter of the Book of James: "Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh." (James 5:8) We need to wait for the Lord’s imminent return patiently. Our earthly life is a short pilgrimage that is filled with much temptations and trials to distract and discourage us from entering into His promised rest in heaven. Our Lord Jesus Christ not only revealed the truth of His second coming to us, He also endowed us with the fruit of the Spirit which is "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance" (Gal. 5:22-23). Christians must possess this clarity of understanding that as we sojourn through this earthly pilgrimage we must grow and mature in the fruit of the Spirit in order to wait patiently for the Lord Jesus Christ’s imminent return.

The Church is a Building under construction. As long as one brick or one stone is not put in place, the church is incomplete, and Christ will not return to receive us unto Himself. There is a need for both personal maturing and corporate witnessing to spread the gospel to all the elect saints to join together in this Body of saints – as a Bride being prepared for the Marriage of the Lamb (Rev. 19) in heaven.

How do you secure a place in heaven?

To secure a place in this heavenly home, one must understand the gospel message and thereby accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and Lord. The Apostle John wrote:

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1 Jn. 5:11-13)

It is clear from these verses that God is the Giver of eternal life. This eternal life is to be found in the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Those who have received the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord have received eternal life. Those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ have rejected eternal life.

Note that John was writing to the believers here: "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1 Jn. 5:13) Those who believe on the name of the Son of God will understand how to secure a place in heaven because heaven is the place where believers will spend their eternity.

Have you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and Lord? Delay no more. Pray to accept the Lord Jesus Christ today!

What must we do to prepare for His return?

In another parable in Luke 19, Christ is the "nobleman" Who gave us "pounds" (talents, time, and treasures) in order that we may "gain by trading". How do we prepare ourselves for the Lord Jesus Christ’s imminent return? "Occupy till I come!" (Luke 19:13)

Moses wrote Psalm 90 wisely. "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away." (Ps. 90:10) Life is short. Death is sure. And after death, there is judgment (Heb. 9:27)! Everyone has an appointment with God – the Judgment! At the Judgment Day, the Lord will carry out His performance appraisal on each person. The pound of one gained ten pounds; the pound of another gained five pounds; and yet another buried his pound for fear of losing it and it gained nothing!

The instruction from the Lord Jesus Christ is clear; we are to gain by trading our God-given talents, time and treasures. How are we living our Christian faith each day? Are we being light of the world and salt of the earth, exerting our Christian influence on others, pointing them the way of salvation in Christ?

We are the "called out ones" or ekklesia (Greek), an assembly of saints marching towards Zion (heaven). Each day to the saints is another day of witnessing opportunity for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Saviour is going out to look for that one lost sheep through us to join the Church before the great and glorious day of His return. Let us spare no effort to win souls for Christ, and faithfully occupy our life till He comes!

When will the Lord come?

The Lord Jesus Christ answered the curious disciples in Acts 1:7 – "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power." It is good that we do not know absolutely the moment of the Lord Jesus’ return. What good does it do for us to know the absolute moment of His coming? Will it make us wiser and become profitable servants? Or will it put us to despair and often discouragement knowing that He is coming on such and such a moment and we can never do enough before that moment?

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: "For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith." (Rom. 1:17) We are called to live a life of faithfulness. The Lord’s commendation to those who stay faithful is this: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant!" (Matt. 25:21, 23) Indeed the just shall live by faith. Faith is hope against hope (Rom. 4:18). Abraham was honoured for his faith in God and he became the father of all nations, and was given the rare title "the Friend of God" (James 2:23).

My dear Reader, are you a friend of God? How are you occupying yourself in the Lord Jesus Christ’s service? Are you trading your God-given resources faithfully for His glory? Is it important for us to know the exact moment of our Lord’s imminent return? Let the Heavenly Father perform His role and decide on the Lord Jesus Christ’s day of return, and let us live in faith to the honour and glory of His name.

Dear Lifers and visitors, may you be found faithful knowing, believing, and serving the Lord Jesus Christ, occupying your life with devotion, worship and service till He comes again. May the words of the Prophet Micah be true in your earthly sojourn: "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" (Micah 6:8).
