THE GIRLS’ BRIGADE MINISTRY OF LIFE B-P CHURCH

Life Bible-Presbyterian Church has been the sponsoring church of the 13th Singapore Company of the Girls’ Brigade since the 30th of April 2013. We are thankful to God that Sembawang Secondary School has given us the opportunity to take part in the character-building of the students in the 13th company.

The Girls Brigade (GB) was founded in 1893 at Sandymount Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Ireland in order to give girls a sense of purpose and discipline. It was a sister organisation of the Boys’ Brigade. GB was set up on the twin pillars of Bible classes and Physical training to offer significant opportunities for girls and young women, as well as giving them Christian teaching, and it has continued to do so ever since. Today there are GB companies in more than 60 countries worldwide.

In Singapore, the first GB company was started 90 years ago at the Methodist Girls’ School. At first, only Christian schools had GB companies. It was only in the 1980s that government schools started to have GB companies. The last 23 years (1993-2016) has seen GB companies formed in 60 schools, bringing the present number of companies to more than 80 and with over 4,000 members.

The aim of the GB is to help young girls to become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility to find true enrichment in life. Its motto is to seek, serve and follow Christ. Our pastors and pastoral staff conduct lessons every year on the Parables of Christ and the Gospel of Mark which are required for the students to earn their Spiritual Badge.

We thank God for using His Word to bless the girls’ character development. As Vanessa, a secondary 4 student, shared last year, “…3 years and 3 months in GB I am grateful that the Lord has shaped me in terms of my character, discipline, leadership and also in my fellowship. In Roman 5:3-5 it says, “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” To all my Juniors, you are now part of GB and whatever difficulties you face, I’d say persevere through it and believe that God will grant you victory. You won’t go anywhere if you do nothing. And lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who has been part of my journey. Thank you for being a blessing to me. God bless everyone.”

Last year, ladies from Life Church took turns to share five devotions based on the elements in the GB crest – the white cross, blue circle, red background, gold crown, lamp and torch – as these have scriptural meanings which can be applied to the students’ lives. Our church ladies also taught the students how to prepare healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner as part of the requirements for their Life Skills Badge.

This year’s devotions will be based on the women of the Bible. Last month many girls were taught how to do fine needlework by our church ladies to complete their patchwork project for the 90th Anniversary of GB Singapore.

A long-term collaboration between our GB ministry and our Student Care ministry in Yishun has begun this year. We thank Life SCC Ltd for granting one of their fulltime staff time off on certain weekdays to lead in GB programmes and activities, and also for allowing the GB students to conduct games and programmes for the children at Huamin Student Care Centre as part of their Values-In-Action and spiritual badgework requirements.

The 13th company girls have been coming to our church three times a year: for their Enrolment Service, GB Fortnight and Christmas. Through these visits friendships have been forged with Lifers. It is particularly heart-warming to see our own teens in LTF, willing to incorporate the GB ministry as part of their program and outreach. Let us make use of these opportunities to reach out to them and encourage them to become followers of Christ.

Please pray for the Lord to bless this ministry. Come and support the GB Enrolment Service which will be held on our Church sanctuary at 11:00 am on Saturday, 25 March 2017. – Pastor
