THE LADIES’ PRAYER GROUP (Part 1)

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1-2)

Thank God for salvation so rich and free. Praise God that I am able to dwell and abide in the shadow of the Almighty in my daily walk as a pilgrim. (Matthew 6:33 is a precious promise to me that I can claim in prayers). My God has blessed me exceeding abundantly for all that I ask and think. He is ever faithful and true to His children. He has planned every detail of my life and leads me along.

The situation of the world we live in today is chaotic and scary. This has more so hastened me to the throne of grace to pray for God’s mercy and grace for my physical and spiritual families, as well as for the security of my country, Singapore.

It is only through prayer and by the grace of God that I can have joy of salvation which is my strength, the divine peace which passes all understanding, comfort of the Spirit, confidence and trust upon His promises and power to live a victorious Christian life.

Dear brethren, may I invite you to take part in this blessed and abundant life in Christ Jesus through prayers.

“At the blessed hour of prayer,
trusting Him we believe

That the blessings we’re needing
we’ll surely receive.

In the fullness of this trust,
we shall lose every care

What a balm for the weary,
O hour sweet to be there.

Tis the Blessed Hour of Prayer (F S Crosby)

                                                       —Christina Toh

I joined the Ladies’ Prayer Group since August 2010. Shortly, sisters Jenny Kan, Judy Loon and Hazel Wong joined the group too. Although our group was small, God is with us during intercessions and answered our prayers. Jesus is in the midst of us. He is always with those who believe, trust, obey and love Him. Amen and Amen.

                                                      —Christine Low

“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another and the Lord hearkened and heard it and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord and that thought upon His name.”(Malachi 3:16)

As a Christian, I am grateful to God for providing various means of grace to help me live a life of faith and repentance. One such means of grace is the Ladies’ Prayer Group.

The Ladies’ Prayer Group is not an extraordinary group of women. Like you, we are still work-in-progress, working on our personal holiness. Most of us are mums and retirees, very ordinary people. Every Thursday morning, we gather at Beulah House to worship God and fellowship. We read His Word and then we pray. There is much spiritual bonding as we share about His work and how He is actively working in our lives.

We are prayer-list intercessors. What we do is to first pray for our beloved pastors, ministry staff and Session members, and then pray through the assignments given to us on our weekly bulletin. We are also concerned about the spiritual revival of our church as we are living in the last days. Praying for the needs of the church undergirds the church with the Lord’s power and protection. We welcome the occasional emergency request but our priority is to consistently and regularly pray for the individuals, missions and issues on the prayer list.

Prayer is a privilege given to all believers and it is a privilege that we must use. As we pray together, we enter into God’s loving presence. As we pray, He allows us to share His heart by aligning our goals and purposes to His goals and purposes. In prayer, He teaches us to listen to Him. So, prayer is not just about us talking and petitioning but it is also about Him teaching us to listen. Often, through the working of the Holy Spirit, transformation happens as He shows us where we have gone wrong. God teaches us about humility in prayer.

Time and again, we are refreshed and strengthened as we see how God answers prayer. He gives us evidence of fruit and souls embrace Christ through the Life Children’s Club, Vacation Bible School, Gospel Sundays, Camps, The Mailbox Club, personal, street and door-to-door evangelism. The Most High God delights in hearing us, teaches us how to pray and accepts our imperfect prayers. Isn’t He wonderful?

Corporate intercession has enriched my closet prayer life. I have learnt to pray for people the Holy Spirit leads me to. It has also deepened my intimacy with Him. In my daily personal prayer, He continues to inspire my heart with His continual love through loving communication with Him. Should I become immobile one day, I can still serve Him by interceding for others. There is no retirement from the Kingdom work.

Biblically, women are to remain silent in the church so we welcome sisters to join us in supporting our brothers who are in the forefront of the battlefield. Be blessed as I have been blessed!

Through corporate intercession, may God make us women “aflame for Christ, and committed to godliness.”                                —Ong Chuay Ying

Just like you, my personal prayers were then about family, career, health issues and salvation for love ones. As I progress into life’s journey the focus of my prayers expanded to include extended family, neighbours and associates and friends. Praying more urgently for personal spiritual growth and a closer walk with God. Knowing that God is always with me and reaping His benefits improved my solitary prayer time.

With coming together as in a group to pray, I felt His presence more strongly. Learning to pray according to His will, submitting and praying with His promises in mind. There is mutual encouragement to remain steadfast, pressing on in praying. Collectively more prayers are prayed. Praying together brings a sense of belonging and acceptance as a part of a greater purpose. There is opening of the heart to the needs of others in the group and sometimes I could be the answer to someone’s prayer. There is strengthening of friendship and bonding as we pray for many common issues.

Standing on the promises in Jeremiah 29:11-13, we hope to experience the transforming power and dynamic ministry of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We will press on praying together for the common benefit of all, in regards to our Church, our country, our fellow sisters and more importantly the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven.                                                    —Jenny Kan
