INTRODUCTION OF NEW CANDIDATES

Our Annual Congregational Meeting is two weeks away. This will be an important event for our church as we will elect those who will form the leadership for the next three years.

In order to help you decide who to vote for in the elections, the CVs of all 31 candidates have been posted on the notice board at our church entrance. Of these, there are seven who are new candidates for deaconship. As they may be unfamiliar to many in the congregation, we are introducing them through what they have written about themselves below. Please pray for them.                            —Pastor

Russell Indran Joel

“Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He hath done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

It is truly a wonderful privilege to serve the Most High God: the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Lord Jesus Christ calls us to serve Him wherever He places us – at our home, our workplace, our school and in our various spheres of influence. I am thankful for how the Lord has now called me to serve tables (the diaconal ministry) in the local church.

By God’s providence, I came to Life Bible-Presbyterian Church 14 years ago. I was richly blessed by the faithful preaching of God’s Word from the pulpit and grew in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. I engaged myself actively in Christian fellowship, beginning with the Youth Fellowship and later in service with the Lively Teens Fellowship. I enjoyed Christian fellowship tremendously and could say with the Psalmist, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” (Psalm 122:1). The Lord was truly gracious to surround me with loving and wise brethren who could guide me in the ways of the Lord, and who showed me the grace and love of our Heavenly Father.

As I grew in my faith and maturity, I was privileged to be given the opportunity to serve in various other ministries in the church – these included the Vacation Bible School, the PA/Video ministry and the Sunday School. Serving the Lord is a truly a great joy and blessing. I am always deeply humbled by how the Lord would use me – only a sinner – to serve His purposes. All glory be unto the Lord for His mercy and enablement.

Today, I am happily married to my lovely wife Eunice and we have a 5-month old son, Samuel. I thank God daily for the wonderful family that He has blessed me with. I pray that we may delight in serving one another within the family and serving others as a family. As I serve the church, my heart’s desire is that the Lord may use me wherever He sees fit, to the glory of His Holy Name. May the Lord be pleased to purge and sanctify me, and make me a vessel fit for the Master’s use (2 Tim 2:21).

Till He cometh!

Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.

Truly only by His Grace was I saved in 1975 and since then I’ve not looked back. Year after year, I’ve experienced God’s hand dealing grace upon grace on my life.

My work takes me around the world and many a time temptations besiege me and my stand for our Lord takes a beating but He pulls me up and out of the miry clay (Psalms 40:2). God always reminds me of Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”. Great is His faithfulness!

Amy and I are blessed with 4 children and 2 grandchildren. By God’s Grace we will be blessed with another grandchild expected end of March.

We returned to Life BP Church in 2014 and have been moved and encouraged to serve the Lord in a formal capacity. Pray God will help me as in Philippians 2:3, that my service for Him will not be through strife nor vain-glory but instead in lowliness with love and bearing one another’s burden.

Looking forward to being of service to my fellow Lifers.

Michael Ong Kah Leong

My life verse is Matthew 6:33 – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

I started attending church through the Sunset Gospel Hour series at Calvary Pandan B-P Church in 1990. Upon invitation by my cousin, I started worshipping at Life B-P Church in 1991 and attended Sunday School. I was subsequently saved and baptized at Life BPC in 1994.

I spent 4 years in London for my studies (1996-99, 2002-3) and attended New Life B-P Church (London). During the 4 years in London, I served in the children’s Sunday School, students ministry (which later became the Young Adults’ Fellowship), evangelism, ushering and chairing the evening services.

After returning from my studies, I began teaching in the Young Teens department of the Sunday School from 2004 till the present. I attended the Young Adults’ Fellowship (YAF) and served in the Exco in various capacities from 2006-2011. I also served as usher and worship chairman at evening services at Life BPC. Currently, I am attending and serving in Faith NBC and the Men’s Ministry.

I work as an administrator at the hospital radiology department. I am married to Jodie and we have been blessed with 3 children – Jonathan (10), Charis (7) and Elliot (4); and are expecting our 4th child in May.

I thank God for salvation and being my guide and stay through life’s journey, where He demonstrated His providence, mercies and all-sufficient grace. Being blessed by the instruction of different ministers of the Word, I have been repeatedly challenged to “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Rom 12:2). It is with gratitude and duty that I seek to serve Christ. May the Lord’s Name be glorified!

Terence Tan Choon Guan

My life verse is Psalm 27:4, “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple.” Ever since I had an encounter with my precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I have been smitten by Him and enthralled by His beauty, wisdom, love, grace and mercy. His divine character and patience with me an unworthy sinner saved by His grace has been my constant awe and wonder. How fortunate and blessed I am to have been called and chosen of Him. It is only reasonable that I repay Him with my life as Romans 12:1,2 calls me to do. And so shouldn’t I dedicate myself to serving Him? Even so it would not be sufficient but I would eternally be indebted to Christ. For He gave up heaven’s glory to condescend to earth to suffer and die for such a worm as I. In actual fact it would be a privilege to serve the King of kings and Lord of lords! What joy and excitement the thought of belonging to the eternal God and being a fellow servant to Him with many in church and also with those who have gone yonder.

I first came to Life church in 1984 when my school mate Sally invited me to attend a YF meeting. She was invited by a nephew of Rev Timothy Tow. The YF chairman in those days was a brother named Beng Kiong, now an elder. The messages in the YF challenged me to live a more consecrated life to Christ. Even though I had been attending church since a young age and was baptized at age 15 in Prinsep St Presbyterian Church, I never really matured spiritually until I came to Life church. Sunday worship services and messages by Rev Timothy Tow quickened the spiritual man within me. YF messages and Bible study challenged me to be a disciple of Christ. It was no turning back from then. And I served the Lord with joy and fervour. And the Lord has never disappointed. Rather, Sally and I were blessed as we served the Lord together. In 1992 Rev Tow officiated our wedding at Life church and Sally has been a wonderful wife and faithful helpmeet ever since. In 1993 our first child Sarah was born. I joined the RSAF as a pilot in 1989 and we were sent to Perth in 1994.

When we returned in 1995, we lived in Pasir Ris and Rev Jack Sin invited us to serve the Lord in Maranatha. Over the years the Lord blessed us with three more lovely daughters. As our girls reached teenage years they yearned for fellowship with more youth of their age. They were drawn to Life church after attending a few YF and LTF meetings on Saturdays. As parents who grew up in Life Church YF, we knew the importance and joys of belonging to a larger fellowship with like-minded Christian youth. In 2012 it dawned upon us that one day we would need to leave Maranatha and move back to Life church. However it was difficult to do as the three adults in my family were involved in various areas of service. Sally was in charge of the Sunday School nursery program, mum was serving in the choir and I was a session member. So after two years of prayer and seeking the Lord’s will, by 2014 we found replacements and made the move to return to mother church. It was painful to leave Maranatha, there were many wonderful brethren whom we had grown to love as we co-laboured over 19 years. Rev Jack Sin has been an excellent mentor and brother in Christ. I learned much through service in the session. It was indeed difficult as much as it was needful to uproot for the sake of our children’s spiritual well-being.

Returning to Life church was exciting though. Old friendships were easily rekindled and new ones were made. We initially joined Faith NBC and later settled down at Thomson NBC where we have many old friends and we made new ones too. I’ve also been a part of the Men’s Ministry which was started in 2015. Sally is serving in the coffee corner and also attending the Ladies Fellowship when she can. Mum is back in the choir and so is Sarah our eldest daughter. Sarah also serves as an Adult Leader in the LTF. Hannah our second daughter attends the YF and Deborah our third daughter is in the process of moving on from the LTF to YF as I write this. Finally, we have Tabitha who is our youngest, she is 15 and attends the LTF.

With whatever talent I may have, I aim to be faithful to the Lord as I serve Him. As my desire has always been to serve my master, the Lord Jesus Christ who has been my guide, sustainer and provider all these years. By His grace I am confident He will see me through this race. And not just me but also my family and all others who trust in Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.”

Ian Tay Wei Ming

I grew up in a Christian family, went to a Christian school and I attended a few different churches regularly with my family before arriving in Life BPC in 2000. However, despite accumulating biblical knowledge, my heart was cold toward God; I was filled with pride and I did not truly have sorrow over my sin. That changed in 2001, when, during a school holiday, the Spirit moved me to reflect on the state of my soul, my sin and my eternal destiny. I repented before God and submitted to His lordship over my life.

The first ministry I was involved in was the Lively Teens Fellowship (LTF). There, I learnt about what it meant to be part of a closely knit Christian community, and discovered the joy of studying the Word in small groups. After a few years there, I served as a group leader, and subsequently joined the committee. In those years, I gained an appreciation for how, on one hand, only the Spirit can do a work in the hearts of men, and yet, on the other, that as committee members we ought to use godly wisdom and diligence to plan programmes and ensure that they are executed in an orderly and God-pleasing manner for the Lord to work through them.

As I became more involved in other ministries, such as PJWS, JWS, YF, Sunday School and YAF, I began to more deeply understand that personal holiness and our daily walk with the Lord are of paramount importance in service, so that we may be sanctified vessels for God's use (2 Tim 2:21). I realised that, as we serve with others who are sinful like us, misunderstandings can easily arise, and that we should always esteem others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3), resolve conflicts in a biblical manner, and hold to the Word alone as the supreme and final authority in making decisions.

I am honoured and humbled that the Lord has directed me to stand for election to the office of a deacon, and it is my prayer that He will help me to serve His people with reverence and godly fear (Heb 12:28).

In March 2003, my wife Laurel, our 3 sons, Bob, Benjamin, Bryan and I attended our first worship service in Life Bible-Presbyterian Church. We experienced God’s love for us with warm fellowship in church. With God’s grace, we were able to settle quickly in the church and in the Thomson NBC to worship, to fellowship and to learn God’s Word.

In March 2005, Laurel, Bob, Benjamin and I were baptised in Life Bible-Presbyterian Church. Bryan was then too young to be baptised. We thank God that Bryan was baptised in 2008.

After my baptism, I joined the Men’s Fellowship. I am grateful for the fellowship of the brethren in the Men’s Fellowship to learn the Word of God, to encourage and build up one another in the faith, to evangelise and to experience the meaning of serving God.

In 2008, I began to serve in the Men’s Fellowship Committee. I was a member in the MF Committee until 2016. Since 2015, I had the opportunity and the privilege to serve in the Church Camp Committee as 2nd IC of Transport & Logistics. I thank God that I can continue to serve in this capacity. I am thankful to God for His grace that I have the privilege to be nominated to serve as Deacon in Life Bible-Presbyterian Church.

Galatians 2:20 always encourages and inspires me. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” This Bible verse constantly reminds me of God’s love to me and how I should live my life as a disciple of Christ. May the Lord help and enable me to serve Him faithfully in obedience to His Word.

To God be the Glory!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, My life verse is taken from Proverbs 3:5,6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

In 1989, I came to Life Church under the invitation of my NUS friend. I joined YAF, was baptized in 1993 and was active in serving the Lord for several years, first in the Ex-co and subsequently as Chairman. It was through God’s grace that I grew in the midst of serving Him. Some years later, the Lord granted me an opportunity to serve Him in the Session (2006 – 2014). It has been a joy to serve with fellow brethren in Christ.

In 2014, God has directed me to take a break from Session, to focus and serve the Lord within my family. I believe service for the Lord can come in different ways in different seasons, depending on the need. The Lord has blessed me and my wife Hui Chuien with 3 lovely children, Yee Shin, Yee Wern and John.

I look forward in serving the Lord together with you.
