Why start a Biblical Discipleship Movement?

As a Church, we launched the Biblical Discipleship Movement (BDM) since 2013! Surprised? Every Lord’s Day, you receive your copy of Church Weekly with our church vision and mission statement below the header: “To build a united church family that is committed to making disciples through Salvation, Sanctification, and Service, to the glory of God.” The first fifty years of Life Bible-Presbyterian Church history had been one of evangelistic outreaches and missions. Our Founding Pastor Rev (Dr) Timothy Tow was a mission-minded pastor, and his constant passion was outreach for souls … Our Session members of 2008 – 2011 had been praying and reviewing our church vision in this new millennium. After several Session retreats and multiple meetings, we decided on the above vision and mission statement.

This is in obedience to the Great Commission given by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:18-20) The Great Commission provides a three-prong mandate that forms the dynamic vision of the church of Jesus Christ. “All” appears three times in the Great Commission indicating the Source, the Scope and the Strategy of the BDM.

Vision is more caught than taught. We can’t teach the church vision; each member must learn to see the BDM vision as revealed by God. If it is a vision from God to the church, the church must obey it … and carry out the activities that work towards this vision. The vision is at best a destination to reach, but the way forward, the direction, and the roadmap towards this destination is something which we need to concretise together under the leadership of the Session which is elected by the congregation every three years. It starts with a Man capturing the vision, and continues as a Movement … God forbid that this BDM should turn into a Machine, or eventually becomes a Monument, only as good as a museum piece! We re-launched the BDM for posterity purpose. It is not just for our present generation and membership per se, it is for the generations to come should the Lord Jesus Christ delay His return. Hence, on 10th June 2017, we re-launched the BDM at the Combined Fellowships and Neighbourhood Bible Communities (NBC) Seminar. This message was emphasised once again on 13th June 2017 at our annual church camp. For those of you who didn’t attend either events, you may also access the presentation slides at our church website (http://lifebpc.com/resources/biblical-discipleship-movement).

BDM is not a project which we just launched. It is in obedience to the Great Commission. BDM is not a programme. It is continuously operationalising our church vision and mission statement. BDM is not just a paradigm shift. It is about our call to Discipleship in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It is about transforming our lives into the image of Christ – to be Christlike. Our Lord Jesus Christ called us: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) Our responsibility is to follow Christ; but our Lord’s promise is that in following Him, He will make us disciple-makers (fishers of men). Discipleship is not optional. Every Lifer must follow Jesus Christ as true biblical disciples of Jesus Christ. Again, Jesus called us: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

Power to be a Witness for Christ

Our Lord Jesus Christ spent forty days after His resurrection with the disciples, and Luke recorded this for our instruction: “To whom also He shewed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.” (Acts 1:3) There are so many topics that our Lord Jesus Christ could have dealt with the disciples during those precious forty days before His ascension. But our Lord Jesus Christ focus on one topic: The Kingdom of God! If He focused on the Kingdom of God, it must be significant for us to know and obey. Our Lord Jesus Christ’s mission was clearly articulated in Luke 19:10: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Christ had accomplished His mission by dying on the cross to save sinners. If Christ had died but never resurrected, then the gospel story will be incomplete. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) This is the Gospel in a nutshell. Christ has completed His redemptive plan to save sinners from eternal condemnation. This is the kingdom of God which He is establishing.

The New Testament Church was started by the Holy Spirit to continue this kingdom building mission. Hence, He told the disciples to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit ten days later on the Day of Pentecost. He told them categorically that: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) This is the disciples’ key performance indicator (KPI). As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are empowered to be witnesses for Him of the gospel of grace. Our home is our Jerusalem. The home is our first mission field. We don’t need to go away very far to be a missionary for Christ. Start with our home, our family members, our loved ones and relatives. Our place of vocation is Judea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Wherever the Lord plants us, bloom for Him!

BDM is a lifelong process

Whatever stage of life you may be at, start your BDM journey. BDM is a lifelong process. Before we become disciple-makers, we need to check if we are following Christ in true obedience. Are you reading your Bible (the Word of God) and praying (talking to God) in your daily observance of quiet time (QT)? Are you participating in the means of grace through fellowship (joining a fellowship or cell group, NBC, etc.)? Are you baptised? Are you taking your holy communion? Do you attend Sunday School or teach at Sunday School? Are you worshipping (attending church worship services) and praying corporately (church prayer meeting)? Are you witnessing and making disciples?

If Life Bible-Presbyterian Church is a united family committed to making disciples, then every member must be part of the BDM process. We only have about 30% of the congregation actively participating in the fellowship groups, NBCs and Sunday School. Where are the rest of you today in the BDM process? Do you need follow-up since you become a Christian? Come and see any of our leaders, and we will be happy to provide you with suitable follow-up lessons and discipleship practices. How about joining one of our fellowship groups or NBCs? After the Combined Fellowships and NBCs Seminar, two brothers came to me to suggest starting a new NBC! Speak to us …

Identifying Disciple-Makers in our Church

There are four convictions we want to share with you:

Jesus is coming very soon!

The urgent task ahead therefore is global evangelisation.

The Church is the carrier of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost world.

The urgent need of the Church today is Biblical Discipleship!

After sixty-seven evolving years, we have come so far in establishing a reformed, evangelical and separated church. This year we commemorate the 500th year of Reformation since 31st October 1517 when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses (Disputation on the Power of Indulgences) on the door of All Saints’ Church and other churches in Wittenberg in accordance with University custom on 31 October or in mid-November.

Our church will join other Bible-Presbyterian Churches to commemorate this event through a four-day Combined B-P Churches Reformation Conference – Commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation movement (9-12 August 2017). There is no better time than this for us to focus on BDM! We need to identify disciple-makers in our church. All the disciple-makers should embark on disciple-making within the fellowship cell groups and NBCs. Our Sunday School will be emphasising on BDM as well. Each Sunday School teacher will become a disciple-maker chartered with the class of disciples for them to teach them in all things according to the Great Commission. We will be calling the disciple-makers to meet with Session members as Mentoring Groups (MGs). Over the next twelve months, we will establish these Cell Groups (CGs) within the fellowship groups and NBCs led by disciple-makers; and group CGLs to join MGs. We will also be conducting Good Soil Evangelism and Discipleship (GSED) Facilitators certification in September. We encourage the first fifty to sign up. There will be ongoing training and development at all levels so that we can develop the BDM process into one that will provide a continuous stream of evangelism and discipling in the years to come.

Salvation, Sanctification, and Service

We have messages covering each of the above throughout 2014, 2015 and 2016. This year we focus on our Lord Jesus Christ’s second coming. Our annual church camp theme was “Behold, I Come Quickly”. We want to remind ourselves to spare no effort in evangelism to bring in those sheep which are still outside the sheepfold. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2) BDM is God’s will for us! To the Ephesians, Paul wrote: “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:17) Jesus concluded His sermon on the mount with the parable of the wise and foolish men: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) Would you be found in God’s will when the Lord Jesus Christ returns? Be part of the BDM process! Reach out to some souls today and bring them into the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, make disciples of Jesus Christ while there is time!                  – Elder Sherman Ong
