Freeing our Hearts from Idols

I.       Introduction

Idolatry is the most frequently mentioned sin in the Bible

         1.      Ten commandments begin with idolatry

2.      1 John 5:21

3.      Romans 1:21-23, 25

         a.   Idolatry is a gateway to all other sins

         b.         Romans 1:28-31


II.     Problem of idolatry illustrated


A.     Idolatry is a problem of the people of God, Ezekiel 14:1-8

          1.      Idols distort your vision, 14:3

          2.      Idols are not primarily external, but internal, 14:3

          3.      Idols lead to practical desertion of God, 14:5

          4.      People enthrone idols and still inquire of God, 14:3

          5.      God will not disclose himself to idolaters 14:4-8

          6.      God’s purpose is to restore idolaters 14:1-8


B.      Understanding the problem of idolatry is important

          1.      We cannot deal with sin only on level of behaviour

          2.      We must deal with sin at the root… not just the fruit

                   a.   Matthew 23:25, 27, 28, responding to fruit

                   b.   Matthew 23:26, Jesus responds at root

                   c.   Root is of first importance… fruit follows

          3.      Illustrations of idols of heart that dethrone God

                   a.  To be loved                                                                     

                   b.  To be respected

                   c.  To speak and be heard                

                   d.  To have no disappointed expectations

                   e.  To pursue goal no interference              

                   f.  To have ease and comfort

                   g.  Possessions                                                                     

                   h.  Pride and Performance

                   i.   Fitness and health                                        

                   j.  Power and influence

                   k. Control

          4.      Idolatry questions:

                   a.   What are idols of heart for me?

                   b.   What things push and pull me?

                   c.   What internal things (root sins) lie beneath my sinful actions?

III. Freeing our hearts from idols

                Transformation comes as we find Christ more desirable than the idols

      1.      Illustrated in life of Apostle Paul, Philippians 3:7-11

      2.      Idols of heart Apostle Paul once boasted in

               a.   Family background and heritage

                                1)  circumcised the eighth day   

                                2)  of the stock of Israel

                                3)  of the tribe of Benjamin

                                4)  Hebrew of the Hebrews

                b.   Personal accomplishments

                                1)  as touching the law, a Pharisee

                                2)  concerning zeal, persecuting the church

                                3)  touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless

      3.      How did these things (idols of heart) become like refuse?

                a.   They were displaced by the all-surpassing greatness of Christ

                                1)  Hebrews 11, Moses chose the reproach of Christ

                                2)  For Apostle Paul in Philippians 3

                                                a) Phil 3:7, counted everything loss

                                                b) Phil 3:8, counted all things but loss

c) …that I might win Christ… to be found in  him…to know him…


                b.  Christ and the delights of Christ must be life for us
