Daniel 4:37

Daniel 4:28-37

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 5th March 2017

“Through pride the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every vice, it’s the complete anti-God state of mind.” - C S Lewis.  God condemns pride repeatedly in the Bible (Prov 6:16-17; 29:23), yet all men struggle with pride. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:16). This is best seen in the life of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 4.

1.   The Samples of Pride.

  • Pride of achievement (Dan 4:30) – bragging: look at this great Babylon I have built; success in academic, career, sports, CCA, etc.
  • Pride of power (Dan 3:15); of appearance; of fame (Acts 12:22-23); of wealth (Lk 12:18-19); of superiority (Lk 18:11-12); of an independent spirit (Heb 13:17). The proud scoffs (Prov 21:24), exaggerates and boasts as it fears no one will notice his greatness (Prov 25:14; 20:6).

2.   The Sinfulness of Pride

  • Pride is sin. (Prov 21:4). Pride fails to acknowledge God as God; it rebels against the will of God (Rom 1:21-22).
  • Pride assumes man is self-sufficient and fails to acknowledge God as the source of all blessings (Dan 4:30 – “I have built”, “my power”, “my majesty”). Compare with Dan 2:37.

3.   The Solution to Pride

  • The grace of God saved the king.  Pride preceded his fall (Prov 16:18; 6:16-17; 29:23). He was humbled (Dan 4:31, 33, 37) and worshipped God. He was not destroyed, but God restored his sanity and kingdom (Dan 4:34, 36). God puts down one and sets up another (Ps 75:5-7).
  • Humility recognizes that I am not God; without God, I am nothing (James 4:13-16; Prov 27:1-2).  Important that all believers be humble
    (1 Tim 3:6) like Christ (Phil 2:5-8).

May the Lord reveal the pride within us. May we repent and strive, by the grace of God, to be humble like Christ.

1.  Are you looking to identify pride in others or yourself?

2.  What kind of pride are you particularly prone to?

3.  How can we guard against pride and cultivate humility? (Phil 2:5-8; Prov 27:2; 1 Tim 6:6-9; James 4:13-16).
