Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 12th March 2017

Daniel 5:1-31 (Rev Colin Wong)

I.       Introduction

A.             There is a saying, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" (George Santayana, Harvard Intellectual).

B.             King Belshazzar was a good example.

II.     Pride comes before the Fall

A.        King Belshazzar was a proud man (22a).

B.         Pride is a sin (Proverbs 8:13).

C.         Pride manifests itself in various forms:

             1.      Self-admiration (Proverbs 27:2).

             2.      Self-attention (Daniel 3:2).

             3.      Self-sufficiency (Daniel 4:4).

III.    Pride Ignores Warning of the Past: King Belshazzar's Ignorance (22b).

IV.    Pride Defies the God of Heaven: King Belshazzar's Blasphemous Act (23).

V.     Conclusion

History is important because it helps us understand why we live the way we are living and why we are where we are.  Studying history allows us to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors so we do not do the same things they did.

King Belshazzar, though he knew his grandfather's mistakes, refused to learn from them.  Pride had made him not to humble himself.  As a result, it caused him to ignore warning of the past, defy the God of heaven and eventually his downfall.

Dearly beloved, let us learn from history....  Amen.
