Daniel 8:1-27

Study of the Book of Daniel:

The Vision of the Ram and the Goat

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 7th May 2017

Text: Daniel 8:1-27

1. The Purpose of this Vision

  • It confirms the message of the first vision (Daniel 7).
  • It gives specific details about the Greek Empire and of the great persecution during the time of this empire.
  • This would benefit the Jews who would face that persecution.

2. The First part of this Vision: The Medo-Persian Empire

  • It is symbolized by a ram (vv.3,4 cf. v.20).
  • Its two horns symbolise Media and Persia.
  • The conquests made by the Persian Kings made it greater than any other empire that had ruled the world up till that time.

3. The Second part of this Vision: The Greek Empire

  • It is symbolized by a goat (v.5 cf. v.21).
  • Its ‘notable horn’ was Alexander the Great.
  • When he died, the empire was divided among his four generals (v.8) - Ptolemy (Egypt and Israel); Lysimachus (Turkey), Seleucus (Syria) and Cassander (Greece).

4. The Third part of this Vision: The Little Horn

  • Israel was caught in the power struggle between Egypt and Syria.
  • The ‘little horn’ was a king of Syria, Antiochus IV Epiphanes (vv.9,23).
  • He defied God and persecuted the Jews (vv.10-12, 25).
  • He is a foreshadow of the Antichrist (cf. the ‘little horn’ in Daniel 7:8).

5. The Truths Revealed in this Vision

  • God sets the limits for human power (cf. the words ‘great’ and ‘broken’).
  • God sends His Word to warn His people (cf. vv.19,13,14).

Questions for Personal Reflection:

1.       Are you making great plans for your future, or are you submitting yourself humbly to God’s will and purpose for your life?

2.       How should you view the things that are happening in the world today?

3.       How can the warnings and promises of God’s Word help you prepare to face the future?
