Matthew 5:5-6

The Right Character

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 16th July 2017

Text: Matthew 5:5,6

1. The Inheritance of the Meek

“Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.”

a. What a Meek Person Is

·         He is mild-mannered toward people, moderate, considerate, thoughtful to others, yielding and friendly (cf. Titus 3:2; Proverbs 15:1; 25:15).

·         Meekness does not mean being gullible or giving in on issues where we must be firm and uncompromising (cf. John 2:23-25; 2 Chronicles 19:2).

·         Jesus is the best example (cf. 2 Corinthians 10:1; Isiah 42:1-3; Mat 11:28-30).

b. How to Be Meek

·         Have a biblical view of yourself and of others.

·         Be careful not to offend or stumble others (cf. Ephesians 4:32).

·         Seek the welfare of others (cf. Philippians 2:4).

·         Be filled with the Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:23).

c. The Reward of Meekness

·         The meek inherit the earth as a gift, freely bestowed upon them by God.

·         It is not this present earth, but a new and better earth (cf. 2 Peter 3:13).

2. The Satisfaction of the Godly

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

a. Godliness Focuses on Heavenly Nourishment

·         Godliness is what man was created for in the beginning.

·         We should desire God and His righteousness with intense longing
(cf. Isaiah 26:9; Psalm 27:4; 42:1,2)

·         This should be of greater worth to us than our basic necessities and earthly pursuits. (cf. Deuteronomy 8:3; John 4:34; Philippians 3:7-10).

b. Godliness is Satisfied in Time and Eternity

·         It brings real satisfaction to the soul (cf. Jeremiah 15:16; Psalm 107:9;
Jeremiah 31:14; Psalm 63:5,6).

·         Godliness with contentment is great gain (cf. 1 Timothy 6:6; Isaiah 55:2).

Questions for Personal Reflection:

1.   What are some situations where a gentle and meek response from Christians can effectively present a good testimony for Christ?

2.   Since meekness is part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, how can you maintain a Spirit-filled life?

3.   Why is satisfaction of the soul greater than any physical satisfaction?

4.   What habits should you work on now to cultivate a truly Christian character?
