Matthew 5:43-48

The Sermon on the Mount:

Love without Limits

Life B-P Church 67th Anniversary, 15th October 2017

Text: Matthew 5:43-48

  • Life B-P Church must be a growing spiritual movement that glorifies God.
  • One of the hallmarks of a growing spiritual movement is love (cf. John 13:35, 1 Thessalonians 3:12).
  • Our love must be superior to the love that the world has:

  1. We Must Have a Universal Love (vv. 43, 44)

a. It is not restricted to any class of people (cf. Luke 14:12-14).

b. It is to be shown even to those who hate us or who are our enemies (v.43, cf. Leviticus 19:18).

c. It is exemplified by David’s love for King Saul. (1 Samuel 24:6; 26:11; 2 Samuel 1:19-27)

  1. We Must Have a Supernatural Love (v.45)

a. Our love must embody the highest standard – God’s own love for mankind (cf. Ephesians 5:1,2).

b. God offers salvation freely to all (cf. Ezekiel 33:11; Luke 15:10; Romans 5:8; 2 Peter 3:9).

c. This love should be the mainspring of all our evangelistic efforts.

  1. We Must Have a Sacrificial Love (vv. 46-48)

a. Overcome the apathy in your heart (cf. 1 John 3:10; 4:7,8).

b. Strive to develop a genuine interest in others (cf. Philippians 2:4).

Questions for Personal Reflection:

1.      How have the good works of unbelievers sometimes put us to shame?

2.      Why is it so hard for us to love and forgive those who sin against us?

3.      Why is love the mainspring for evangelistic efforts?

4.      How can we develop a genuine interest in others?
