Why Pray When God Knows Our Needs?

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 29th October 2017

Matthew 6:7-8

  • The Protestant Reformation was accomplished with much prayer.
  • The right knowledge of God is important to our prayers.
  • We must pray with the knowledge that God knows all things. (cf. Daniel 9:20-23; Psalm 139:4)
  • Matthew 6:8 – “…for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him.”

There are three reasons why we should pray…

  1. God has promised to hear us when we pray.
  • Jeremiah 33:3 – “Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
  • But what we ask for may not be what we need (E.g. 1 Kings 19:4).
  1. God uses prayer to deepen our relationship with Him.
  • We should be praying that God will deal with us graciously according to what He already knows.
  • Our prayers are meant to express our full trust and confidence in God. This deepens our relationship with Him.
  • Hebrews 4:16 – “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
  1. God wants us to trust Him to do what is best.
  • Psalm 37:5 – “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.”

Understanding that God knows all our needs should encourage us to pray even more and more!

Questions for Personal Reflection:

  1. If reliance on God is so important, what priority should you give to prayer?
  2. How can you find time to pray as much as you should?
  3. How can you make your prayers purposeful rather than perfunctory?
