John 1:1-18

Holding forth the Word of Life:

Basking in the Light of the Son

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 7th January 2018

Text: John 1:1-18

  • John’s Gospel was designed to establish more fully the identity of Jesus as the Son of God (John 20:31).
  • It will benefit all who need to be rescued, reminded or revived!
  • There are three great reasons why we should believe in Jesus Christ:

  1. He is Our True Light (vv.1-9)
  • In contrast to the True Light, John the Baptist was only one of many lights and witnesses that God had given to man (vv.1,6).
  • Christ stands far above every other light (cf. Matt 5:14; John 8:12).
  • Application: Should you look to any other faith for light?

  1. He Gives Us Divine Life (vv.10-13)
  • Sin had made all people dead and unresponsive to God (v.5).
  • A sinner can have Life only by receiving Christ (v.12), but how can he do this if sin prevents him from comprehending the Light?
  • He needs to have a new nature that can comprehend the Light (v.13).
  • It is only by God’s grace that a sinner can become a child of God.
  • Application: Are you born of God? (v.12, Romans 8:15,16)

  1. He Reveals God to Us Fully (vv.14-18)
  • “And the Word was made flesh” expresses the mystery of the incarnation (14, cf. 1 Timothy 3:16).
  • We must accept this truth with child-like faith.
  • God retained His divine nature while taking on our human nature.
  • Christ is God’s ultimate and final revelation (vv.17,18, John 14:9).
  • This is why He is called the “Word” in v.1 (logos; cf. Philippians 2:16)
  • Application: What priority do you give to knowing Christ?

Questions for Personal Reflection:

  1. How has studying this passage improved your knowledge of Jesus Christ?
  2. How can you ‘hold forth the Word of Life’ more effectively?
  3. What should you do when people refuse to receive Christ as their Saviour?

Verse for the Week

January 21 & 28 - The Power of Prayer

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16
