Sunday School as Biblical Discipleship Channel

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

I am writing this message with great urgency!  Our Church is on the move because our God is on the move.  Never before is the second coming our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ emphasised so urgently.  It is almost, as if, that Jesus Christ is coming in the next moment!  That’s the meaning of “imminent”.  Yes, Jesus may come in the morning, Jesus may come at noon, Jesus may come in the evening, so keep your heart in tune … so we sing in our church regularly.

The motivation for every Sunday School staff and student should be “Jesus Christ” – our Lord and Saviour.  He is our Chief Motivator to live purposefully.  The Westminster Larger Catechism question number one:  What is the chief and highest end of man?  Answer:  Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy Him forever.  If we truly understand this biblical teaching, we should consecrate our daily life to live for Him.  Living for Christ means obeying Him.  How else can we obey the Lord Jesus Christ unless we go to His revealed Word?  God is a speaking God; He reveals Himself to sinful man.  God also reveals His plan of salvation for the lost mankind.  He sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins 2,000 years ago in order that we may have a way back to God.  Those who received the Gospel repents of their sins and became disciples of Jesus Christ.  Biblical discipleship is not optional.  Hence, we need to keep our daily quiet time and commune with God Who redeemed us through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ.

God has given us 2 Thessalonians 3:3 for 2018.  We are to live a Christ-centred life in 2018!

But the Lord is faithful”

Biblical discipleship speaks of God’s faithfulness.  “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24) God in His divine predestination has called us to follow Him.  Our salvation is not an afterthought.  God designed and planned for our salvation.  He knew that when we fell from grace into sin, we need a salvation plan to restore us to fellowship with Him again.  So, He sent His Son to die for us 2,000 years ago.  God’s salvation plan is cast in concrete.  Only those who respond to His plan will be saved.  He told His disciples, “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) God is faithful … when He calls us, He will make us “fishers of men” – this is God’s responsibility.  The Apostle Paul reminds us that “But the Lord is faithful”, yes, God is indeed faithful; but we are unfaithful and often time faithless!  Instead of thriving in faith trusting God in all things, we fumble and make excuses for not following Christ.  As much as making us “fishers of men” is God’s responsibility, following Christ is our individual responsibility!  We need to abide in Christ daily and live in the centre of His holy will.  To do this, we need to read and study the Bible – God’s Word.  Hence, Sunday School is a channel of Biblical Discipleship.  At Sunday School, not only we teach the Word of God, we teach the students to go forth to make disciples for Christ.  You are young only once.  You have a special privilege to reach out to your classmates when others can’t!

“Who shall stablish you”

Not only is our Lord faithful, He also promises that He will stablish us … prepare us, strengthen us, and set us forth to be light of the world and salt of the earth.  “13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16) The very quality of light and salt is given by God.  We are to fulfil His designed intention to provide light and preservation to the very society that we live in.  Little by little, we are to influence those who live around us, and draw them to Jesus Christ.  In this way, we become “fishers of men” over time.

And keep you from evil”

Our God is faithful in all His ways and He will not leave us in a lurch.  Not only will He “stablish” us, He will also protect us from evil. “8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” (1 Peter 5:8-9) Evil is everywhere, if we are not careful and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ Who is “the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), we will not be able to fulfil His mission on earth.  Let us be faithful to Him always, and seek to find the lost souls whom we can influence and bring into His kingdom.  God has also promised us that “there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) With every testing, there is a way of escape to them who “love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).  This is not a teaching on escapism, but a strong reminder that God will always protect us who follow Jesus Christ.  With every crisis, there is also an opportunity to testify of God’s saving grace and mercies upon us every day.  Let Sunday School be a strong channel for Biblical Discipleship.  The Biblical Discipleship Movement launched on 10th June 2017 at the Combined Fellowships and Neighbourhood Bible Community Seminar is not a project; it is not a programme, and it is definitely not just a paradigm shift!  It is all about Jesus Christ.  It is about our transformed life, touching other lives to be transformed by God for His glory.

May God help us to move forward as He leads us in 2018 to be “fishers of men” – a Disciple-Maker for Christ, so that we will be able to fulfil His Great Commission for the Church until He comes. Amen.
