Text: Acts 19:8-20
- The Preaching of the Word
1.1. Faithfulness (v.8): The apostle Paul preached the Word boldly and faithfully in the synagogue at Ephesus for three months, reasoning and persuading the unbelieving Jews.
1.2. Focus (vv.9-10): When the apostle Paul was rejected by the unbelieving Jews, he set himself apart and separated the believers, and continued teaching the Word in the school of Tyrannus for 2 years.
1.3. Apply: We must develop a focus in doing the Gospel work and be faithful in the preaching and teaching of God’s Word.
- The Pretentious Works
2.1. Favour (vv.11-12): God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul in healing the people of their sicknesses and casting away of the evil spirits as a sign of authentication that he was sent by God.
2.2. Fakes (vv.13-17): The seven sons of Sceva attempted to imitate Paul in casting out the evil spirit and were hurt by that spirit.
2.3. Apply: Do not be discouraged when there are fakes imitating our work in the Gospel – this demonstrates that we are doing a good / right thing.
- The Prevailing Word
3.1. Fear (vv.18-19): The fear of God came upon all men, and their hearts were turned to God; with demonstration of their faith.
3.2. Flourish (v.20): The word of God flourished and prevailed against the oppositions and fakes.
3.3. Apply: We must completely trust God regarding the work of faith and not focus on the results – the Word of God will prevail.
