Text: Psalm 78:4-7

We thank God for His faithfulness in seeing us through each milestone.
God’s faithfulness is seen in all His works:
- The Works of God reveal His faithfulness to His Word.
- He has kept all the promises He made to His people. (Cf. Joshua 21:45; 1 Kings 8:56)
- The works of God mentioned in Psalm 78:
⃝ He gave the Law to Israel at Mount Sinai. (v.5)
⃝ He did great miracles to rescue them from slavery. (vv.12,13,43-51)
⃝ He sustained them during their journey. (vv.15,16,23-25)
⃝ He gave them the Promised Land. (vv.54,55)
⃝ He chastised them for their own good. (vv.38,39)
- The works of God in the Church: (cf. Matthew 16:18)
⃝ It has survived Satan’s onslaughts from without.
⃝ It has withstood Satan’s devices working from within.
⃝ It was rescued from man-made traditions and idolatrous practices.
⃝ It has faced great challenges but a godly remnant was always raised up.
- God alone must receive all the glory for what we are today.
- The Works of God must be faithfully declared to every generation.
- We must keep passing on our knowledge of God’s works to the next generation. (vv.4,6,10,11)
- This will then bring praise and glory to God from each successive generation. (cf. 2 Timothy 2:2)
- Israel became unfaithful to God because of their sinful heart. (vv.8,37)
- If we do not watch our hearts carefully, we too may become unfaithful.
- The Works of God should lead us to hope and faithfulness.
Verse 7 – “…That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.”
We should endeavour to be:
- Faithful to God (cf. John 3:30)
- Faithful to fulfill our God-given roles
- Faithful to the whole counsel of God (cf. 2 Timothy 3:16)
However, our hope for success must ultimately be found in God:
- Psalm 78 paints a very bleak picture:
Every generation’s faithfulness did not last very long. - But it ends with a wonderful picture of hope:
God’s provision of a King who will feed and guide them like a good shepherd. (vv.70-72) - Through Jesus Christ we have the best hope that the work of God’s kingdom will succeed.
Conclusion
- The Lord has been faithful to Life B-P Church for the past 73 years.
- Although we need to declare His faithfulness from generation to generation, we do not know for sure whether we will do it well.
- But this one thing we know: God is faithful! (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
Questions for Reflection:
- What can we do to remain faithful to God?
- How can we fulfill our God-given roles well?
- What should we do to be faithful in declaring the whole counsel of God?
