Jesus, My Lord, My God and My All

Text: John 20:19-29

Introduction

Christianity is not just another religion. It is about our relationship with the only true and living God. God says in Isaiah 44:6,24, “I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God … I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heaven alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.”

Jesus, My Lord, My God and My All is a notion that warrants our serious reflection on whether we have truly and firmly believed in the God of the Bible and live it out evidently in our lives.

Unbelieving Thomas

Despite spending three full years with the Lord, Thomas would not believe the tenfold testimony of the other disciples that Christ had risen and demanded to see with his own eyes Jesus’ nail-pierced hands and pierced side. A week later, the Lord graciously granted his demand and Thomas was thoroughly convinced and confessed, “My Lord and my God”. Thomas response was one of the highest Christological confessions in the Gospel. It was not simply a doctrinal confession, but a declaration of truth and a statement of trust and relationship. Do we believe our God with the same conviction and persuasion? Thomas’ life was completely turned around by God and from then on, he followed Christ faithfully till death.

Is Jesus My Lord?

Jesus is Lord means He is one with authority, control, and power over us. Jesus is Lord is more than just a title of honor or respect; He is God. If Jesus is my Lord, He expects my total obedience and submission. “Why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46). All the pretenses and all the devout actions performed are no substitute for obedience.

Is Jesus My God?

Jesus is the Great I AM and He is a jealous God who will not share His glory with another (Exodus 20:5). If so be that we have tasted that the Lord is good and gracious, let us give Him our all, and follow Him whole-heartedly and faithfully. If Jesus is our God, do we honor and fear Him? “How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him” (1 Kings 18:21).

Is Jesus My all?

All means absolutely without reservation and holding back. If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all. God demands our total and absolute allegiance and faithfulness. Israel’s history of disobedience despite repeated warnings from God’s prophets serves as lesson for us to learn the pitfalls of serving two masters.

Conclusion

Brethren, we are warned to take heed, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But to exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrew 3:12–13).

Though we may struggle to believe or understand all that Jesus has in store for us, He does not turn away our questions or leave us in our unbelief. Rather, He helps to strengthen our faith so that it becomes stronger and more genuine. “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” – this is the faith that pleases the Lord (Hebrew 11:1, 6).

Questions for Reflection:

1.Share the last time that you really experienced God in your life where you could honestly testify that it was His doing, His leading, His blessing and His providence for you and/or your loved ones.

2.What do you understand by Jesus is my Lord? How do you demonstrate Christ’s lordship over your life?

3.What do you understand by Jesus is my God? How do you fear and honor God in practical ways in your daily life?

4.What does “Jesus is my all” mean to you? How can you serve God unreservedly and what does total allegiance and submission entail?
