Christ, Superior to the Angels

Text: Hebrews 1:4-14

I. Christ is Exalted Above the Angels (vv. 4-5)

1. He is fully God and fully Man
2. He is eternally the Son of God (cf. Psalm 2:7)
3. His resurrection manifests His Sonship to the full (today, I have begotten you cf. Acts 13:33)
4. He is the greater son of David-Messiah cf. 2 Samuel 7:14

II. Christ is Extolled by the Angels (vv. 6-7)

1. He is exalted above all creatures - firstbegotten or firstborn (cf. Colossians 1:15)
2. Angels worship Christ - OT reference: Psalm 97:7. NT: Luke 2:13,14; Revelation 5:11,12
3. Angels are His agents. Winds (spirit, swift); Flames of fire (judgement, illumination and power) cf Psalm 104:4
4. Angel’s rebuke of Apostle John (Rev 19:10)

III. Christ is Enthroned and Not the Angels (vv. 8-14)

1. He is God-Sovereign and Anointed (8-9 cf. Psalm 45:6-7)
2. He is God-Eternal, Creator and Immutable (10-12 cf Psalm 102:25-27; Hebrews 13:8)
3. He is God-Triumphant (13-14 cf. Psalm 110:1)
