ACTIVE AGEING
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his 2023 National Day Rally Speech mentioned that Singapore is an aged society and soon will be a “super-aged” society. In fact, there will be 2000 centenarians by 2030, doubling the numbers in 2019. He therefore encouraged seniors to play their part in active ageing—taking more responsibility for their own health, leading a more active lifestyle and participating in community activities for seniors so that they can be mentally and physically healthy.
Life B-P Church will be 73 years old next month and it is not surprising that the age profile of our congregation mirrors the population profile of Singapore. Our church therefore is also concerned for our seniors’ well-being, not just mental and physical but also spiritual.
However, we know that active ageing does not start when we are old but when we are young. Therefore, it is important to prepare for old age. D.L. Moody, an American evangelist who lived in the 19th century said this, “Preparation for old age should begin no later than one's teens. A life which is empty of purpose until 65 will not suddenly become filled on retirement.” If you are young, join our Lively Teens Fellowship or Young Lifers’ Ministry that comprises the Youth Fellowship, Young Adults’ Fellowship and Sunday School. Being a part of these ministries will help you to grow spiritually (actively ageing spiritually) in Christ and prepare for old age.
When we become old, whether we like it or not, our bodies will naturally deteriorate regardless of how physically or mentally active we are. In Ecclesiastes 12:1-6 Solomon depicts how our bodies will decline through age. Active ageing should not just be focused on the physical and mental but also on the spiritual. Paul emphasizes this when he wrote to his spiritual son, Timothy, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). The psalmist records for us a picture of true spiritual active ageing, “They shall bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing” (Psalm 92:14). Someone has said that “Age is not all decay; it is the ripening, the swelling, of the fresh life within, that withers and bursts the husk.”
We thank God we have our Senior Care Ministry (SCM) and Seniors Fellowship (SF) to cater to the spiritual needs of our seniors.
The SCM was formed sometime in 2018 to render spiritual care and practical help for our seniors. Some of our church office bearers and the Senior Care Coordinator (SCC) from the SCM have contacted seniors who are not in any fellowship groups to encourage them in the Lord, to get to know the church and to provide any assistance if needed. Board Games Day is organized on a weekday, so that seniors could have a time of fellowship over God’s Word, songs, board games and food.
The SCM also works in tandem with the SF (formerly called Golden Age Fellowship) by encouraging seniors to participate in the various spiritual activities for the seniors in our church. Our seniors gather via Zoom to have fellowship meetings with invited speakers and study the Bible together on the 2nd Wednesday and the 2nd Saturday of the month respectively. There is also an onsite quarterly fellowship meeting on the 1st Saturday of that quarter. Furthermore, whenever seminars and outings are organized for the seniors, there will be sharing of God’s Word before the programmes commence.
Besides the SCM and SF, the Ladies’ Fellowship and Men’s Ministry are avenues for our seniors (young or elderly seniors) to participate. Therefore, there is much support for our seniors in church to be engaged in active ageing physically, mentally and spiritually.
For those of us who are above 50 years and above, do take the opportunity to participate in these ministries that our church has. A former President of USA, Abraham Lincoln, has said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” May the Lord help us!
