HOLD THE ROPE
William Carey, the “Father of Modern Missions” preached a sermon on reaching the lost from Isaiah 54 on the 30 May 1792. After the service, he met with a band of supporting pastors and shared with them his calling as a missionary to India. One pastor suggested that the field of India was so grim and unknown that it would be like going into a deep mine that had never before been explored. Carey looked into their eyes and said, “I will go down if you will hold the rope.”
By Our Support
Missionaries today continue to go down into the “deep mine.” We thank God that our church is doing our part to fulfill the Great Commission and has been holding the rope for our missionaries and partners-in-missions in Indonesia (Batam), Cambodia, Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan. We have also been collaborating with Rev Lim Yew Cheng and supporting the churches in Tangkak and Malacca in Malaysia.
We also thank God that the Missions Committee has been actively holding the rope for our missionaries and partners-in-missions ensuring their spiritual, physical, emotional and financial welfare are well taken care of. Short mission trips have also been planned ever since the borders were opened after the pandemic. Last year and this year, the trips planned involve conducting Vacation Bible School (VBS), Sunday School, Medical and Dental Missions, preaching and training of leaders. Lifers are encouraged to serve with their spiritual gifts and talents during these short-term mission trips. The presence of Lifers at the mission stations brings much encouragement to missionaries and the people there.
By Our Prayers
Furthermore, the church is holding the rope by constantly praying for our missionaries and partners-in-missions during pastoral prayer in our Sunday worship services and at our prayer meeting every Tuesday night. The missionaries’ prayer requests have also been listed and updated in the Sunday church weeklies’ prayer list in order that every Lifer will hold the rope to remember to pray for them. For your information, the Missions Committee is planning a Missions Seminar on 28 September 2024 (Saturday), 3-6pm. Do save this date in your calendar.
Missionaries battle with their own sins, self-doubt and discouragement. At times, they face fatigue, dangers and difficulties. The adversary, the devil is hurling his fiery darts relentlessly to oppose the gospel work. The apostle Paul who was a missionary himself, faced all these. He knew that he could overcome only if God’s people pray for him and his co-workers. He valued the power of prayer. For example, to the church in Thessalonica he wrote, “Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you” (2 Thessalonians 3:1 see also Romans 15:30; 2 Corinthians 1:11; Philippians 1:19 Colossians 4:3 and 1Thessalonias 5:25).
May we take heed to God’s command through the apostle Paul to pray for our missionaries rather than to be arm-chair critics. Christians should be known as the people most willing to extend grace. There was a story of a man who came up to the American evangelist, D.L. Moody and criticized him for the way he went about winning souls. Moody listened courteously and then asked, “How would you do it?” The man, taken aback, mumbled that he didn’t do it. “Well,” said Moody, “I prefer the way I do it to the way you don’t do it.”
By Being Faithful
Besides all these, we must be mindful that holding the rope also means that our church remains faithful to God and His Word. A doctrinally sound church is crucial to supporting the missionaries and partners-in-missions well. Why is this so? When a church lightly esteems God’s Word and dilutes the gospel, its burden for souls to be saved from the eternal clutches of hell will not be taken seriously. Inevitably, the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) will be disregarded. As a result, support for its missionaries will be impacted adversely. Missionaries will also find it difficult to fully trust a sending church that is renegading from the Word of God and the gospel. Their morale and motivation are affected. For those who comply with the sending church’s theological drift this will lead to the dilution of the gospel in the mission fields.
After William Carey told the band of pastors, “I will go down if you will hold the rope,” he took an oath from each of them that while they lived, they would never let go of the rope. We pray that our church will always hold the rope for our missionaries and partners-in-missions as they toil and labour in the harvest fields.
