EVERYBODY OUGHT TO KNOW
I used to sing this song “Everybody ought to Know” often when I was young. Incidentally, it is also found in our Then Sings My Soul (TSMS) songbook. It is a simple song but a very good reminder that everybody ought to know Jesus. God in His infinite wisdom has placed this responsibility upon His redeemed people to do so evidenced by Jesus’ Great Commission for us and the apostle Paul’s words in Romans 10:14,15, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
This Christmas season is an opportune time to share the Good News of salvation to those who are still outside the kingdom of God. Christmas is a time when non-believers are willing to hear the gospel and to step into a church. It is also a time for those who have backslidden from the faith to come back to the Lord Jesus.
Therefore, let us strike when the iron is hot during this Christmas season. We thank God our church has gospel outreaches spreading the good tidings of great joy to others. The Ladies’ Fellowship had a Christmas fellowship cum lunch last Saturday morning inviting loved ones and friends for a time of praise and sharing the gospel. Likewise, the Lively Teens Fellowship, the Youth Fellowship and the Senior Fellowship had a combined Christmas event. Yesterday, the Young Lifers’ Ministry had a Christmas Gospel Evening to reach out to youths and young adults with the gospel. For the last two Fridays, some of our brethren were distributing tracts and sharing the gospel heartily with strangers at Orchard Road.
If we have not invited our loved ones or friends to any of the gospel gatherings, there is still opportunity for us to do so. There is a Christmas Eve Service (bilingual) on 24 December at 8 pm. Pastor Calvin Loh will speak on the topic, Jesus Came for You. Do not hesitate to invite your loved ones and friends to hear the Good News of salvation and the sure hope of everlasting life with God.
But there are some of us who are unwell and unable to participate in the activities during this Christmas season. We can pray. We can lift up our petitions to God to ask for His grace and mercy to save those who are hearing the gospel during this time. We can ask God to give courage and wisdom to speak to those who are sharing the gospel.
Truly, we thank God that our church, by His grace continues to hold forth the Word of Life. I say this with heartfelt thanks because, when I was in UK recently, I saw that a significant number of churches there had been converted to recording studios, cafes, museums and gift shops. We pray that Life B-P church will continue to fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus. May it always be our prayer that everybody ought to know who Jesus is. Let us be a gospel witness for Him with our lips and life to lead someone to Christ. May the Lord help us!
– Rev Quek Keng Khwang
Everybody ought to know,
Everybody ought to know,
Everybody ought to know who Jesus is.
He's the Lily of the Valley,
He's the Bright and Morning Star;
He's the fairest of ten thousand -
Everybody ought to know.
On the cross He died for sinners,
And His blood makes white as snow;
Loving, living, coming Saviour -
He's the one you ought to know. (TSMS 376)
Shorter Catechism Question 27
Q. 27. Wherein did Christ’s humiliation consist?
Christ’s humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time .
