Strengthening the Churches at Banlung, Cambodia

And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the  country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

(Act 18:23)

The apostle Paul’s missionary endeavors were not solely to preach the gospel and found churches. His burden was to follow up with the believers by strengthening their faith in Jesus. In his return leg of his first missionary trip to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch Pisidia, he strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them in the faith (Acts 14:22). Likewise, in his third missionary journey, he returned to Galatia and Phrygia which he visited in his second missionary journey to strengthen the disciples again (Acts 18:23).

Paul saw the importance of follow-up to ensure that the believers he ministered to would be rooted and grow in the faith. Therefore, on the 12 April, Dn Mark Heah, our Missions Field Representative and Dn Alvin Chow (member of Missions Committee) and the rest of us, Helen Heah, Victor Lee and his wife, Jane and I went to Banlung, Cambodia to strengthen the faith of the believers namely the youths, the church in Le Village and to encourage sis Pui Meng. Although sis. Pui Meng has retired from active mission work in Le Village, Banlung, she is still staying there to provide support to the missionaries there.

Prior to the mission trip, we faced difficulties to obtain a permit to teach there. In addition, some of us were down with Covid-19 and I was feeling under the weather too. But thank God, nearing the date of departure to Cambodia, the permit was finally approved and those of us who were unwell recovered.  This was no coincidence but all attributed to the Lord’s goodness and mercies in hearing the prayers of His children to allow us to go for this mission trip.

Our good Lord provided a conducive place for us to conduct our Seminar which is the basement of a café which is a stone’s throw away from Pui Meng’s rented house. Dn Mark Heah, Dn Alvin Chow, Victor Lee and I taught the youths The Purity of Life (by Rev Dan Ebert III) covering the 10 Commandments. Despite the tropical heat and humidity of April, the youths gave their utmost attention. The challenges they face are universal among youths. They are: being unequally yoked, dysfunctional families, addiction to mobile phones and increasing materialism. We impressed upon them that these challenges could be overcome with love and obedience to God and His Word and the Lord will be gracious and able to help them.

On the Lord’s Day, we travelled an hour’s journey to Le Village Church to conduct Sunday School and Worship Service. Dn Mark Heah and Helen Heah taught the Youth Sunday School, whereas Victor Lee and Jane taught the Children Sunday School. I preached on the theme ‘Because Jesus Lives’ from John 14:19 at the Worship Service. The Lord’s Supper was also conducted for the first time after a three-year pandemic and also due to the absence of an ordained minister to conduct it. Those who partook the holy sacrament were thankful to God and their faith was strengthened.

The mission team presented a song item “Because He Lives” in Khmer and English to reinforce the sermon that was preached. The church members requested us to sing a Chinese hymn.  Victor and Jane bravely went up to sing, 有一件礼物 and explained the meaning of the song to them.

After the church service, I thank God that I was able to pray for an elderly man suffering from Parkinson’s disease whom we visited a few years back.

We proceeded to Ratanakiri Love Church to encourage pastor Ratha and his wife. Pastor Ratha was one of Rev Moses Hahn’s Bible Institute’s students. He had been interpreting for us at the Youth Seminar. When we arrived at Ratanakiri Love Church, there were six children eagerly waiting for us. Alvin taught them the story of David and Goliath. Thereafter, they did some crafts based on the Wordless Book.

We prayed for pastor Ratha that he will be able to obtain approval from the authorities to renovate the church as it is dilapidated and a sad contrast to the surrounding well-built homes. Ratanakiri Love Church is supported by a Hong Kong Christian Association.

It is by God’s grace that the pandemic is over and international borders are open, giving us an opportunity to resume our mission trips. Thank God that the Missions Committee has scheduled mission trips for the whole year. We would do well in following the example of the apostle Paul of going about strengthening the churches in his missionary journeys. Continue to pray for our missionaries and partners in missions as they labour in the Lord’s vineyard. Your prayers will strengthen them.

May Life B-P Church continue to send out His light and His truth (Psalm 43:3).
