Honouring Mothers

On this Mother’s Day, we wish to honour all mothers and thank God for their faithfulness.  We know the importance of mothers and their role in keeping families together.  A godly and responsible mother will garner love from her children and praises from her husband as we read in Proverbs 31:28 - ‘Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her’

Likewise, we are to respect and honour our mothers.  Apostle Paul reminded us of the 5th Commandment and said this is the first one with a promise of long life (Eph 6:2-3), quoting from Deuteronomy 5:16 - ‘Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee’.

As an honour to all mothers today, I have chosen to share an article I read years ago and one that I share frequently during Sunday School lessons.  This is to remind us of a mother’s unfailing love, and our thankfulness to the Lord for giving us mothers who love us dearly.  Blessed Mother’s Day!

Elder Roger Lim

 A Mother's Love

(Source: http://www.inspirationpeak.com/ )

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

For cutting the grass: $5.00
For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00
For going to the store for you: $.50
Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: $.25
Taking out the garbage: $1.00
For getting a good report card: $5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00
Total owed: $14.75

Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he’d written on, and this is what she wrote:

For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me: No Charge
For all the nights that I’ve sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you: No Charge
For all the trying times, and all the tears that you’ve caused through the years: No Charge
For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead: No Charge
For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose: No Charge
Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge.

When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: “PAID IN FULL

NEW ELDERS AND DEACONS

Those who attend the 11:00 am worship service today will be able to witness the ordination of five new elders and the installation of seven new deacons:

  Elder Heng Shao Sheng

  Elder Peter Koy

 Elder Michael Ong

  Elder Terence Tan

  Elder Woon Sin Wei

  Deacon Chen Wei’an

  Deacon Alvin Chow

  Deacon Christopher Goh

  Deacon Surya Kusuma

  Deacon Timotheus Lee

  Deacon Lim Ming Yann

  Deacon Joash Tan

Some of us may want to know the significance of the laying on of hands. In the context of the ordination of new elders and the installation of new deacons, laying on of hands symbolises investing with authority to carry out God’s work. This practice is based on Numbers 27:18-23.  It was also practised in the New Testament church (Acts 6:6; 1 Timothy 4:14; 5:22).

We will also witness the dedication of the new Session of our church to serve for the next three years. The new Session members will commit themselves to fulfil their responsibilities to the best of their ability and strive with God’s help to be good examples to the flock. At the same time, we would ask you as a church member to commit yourself to respect our new Session members, encourage them, cooperate with them, and pray for them (Hebrews 13:17). Your prayers are much needed to ensure that our church will be governed well, according to biblical principles.

May the Lord enable all our new Session members to be humble, Christ-like and Christ-led servant-leaders, and enable all members to do their part well so that together we may fulfil our mission and vision of building a united church family that is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ through salvation, sanctification and service, to the glory of God.
