F.R.O.G.

For a Christian, Sunday should be a day of rest and worship, a time to unwind and recharge spiritually for the week ahead. However, for many people, Sundays can be filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what awaits them on Monday. Whether it's the pressure of impending deadlines, a challenging work or study environment, or simply the fear of the unknown, these worries can cast a dark shadow over our day of rest which our God commanded.

But as followers of Christ, instead of allowing our anxieties or worries to consume us, we are called to Fully Rely On God (F.R.O.G.). I once saw a frog leaping from one lily pad to another. It leaped with unwavering confidence and faith that it would land on the lily pad safely. Just as a frog leaps across lily pads with trust that it will land safely, we are called to leap in faith, trusting in God's plan and provision for our lives.

Proverbs 3:5-6 provides us with a reminder of how to fully rely on God, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. This was Solomon’s advice to his son to live a life of trust in God.

  1. Trust with All Your Heart

To fully rely on God, we must first trust Him. Trusting in the Lord starts with believing in Jesus for salvation, understanding that only through Him we can receive forgiveness and eternal life. This belief fosters a desire to deepen our knowledge of Him. The more we know God, the more we love Him, and the greater our love, the stronger our trust grows.

Trusting in the Lord with all your heart involves letting go of your own understanding and staying focused on the Lord. This is exemplified in the story of Peter walking on water from Matthew 14:22-33. When Peter steps out of the boat and walks towards Jesus on the water, he begins to sink as soon as he notices the strong wind and becomes fearful. Jesus rescues him and asks, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" This incident teaches us that trust in God requires us to focus on His power and presence, rather than on the circumstances around us.

When we fully rely on God, we stay focused on Him and we let Him take control of our lives, trusting that He will guide us through difficult times and protect us from hidden dangers.

  1. Lean Not unto Your Own Understanding

In times of anxiety and uncertainty, it can be tempting to rely on our own understanding or seek validation and reassurance from others. When we lean on our own understanding, we can easily be swayed by fear, doubt, and insecurity. We may try to find solutions and answers in our limited human perspective, but God's ways are higher than ours [His mind is not our mind].

In Judges, God instructs Gideon to reduce his army from 32,000 men to just 300 to fight against the Midianites (Judges 7). This decision seems militarily unsound and defies human logic, but Gideon trusts God’s command. The victory that follows is clearly attributed to divine intervention rather than human strategy.

To fully rely on God, we must acknowledge that God's wisdom is boundless and trust Him to lead us through life's complexities. Our own understanding is limited and shaped by our experiences, fears, and biases.

  1. In All Your Ways Acknowledge Him

To acknowledge God means to recognize God’s presence, sovereignty, wisdom and guidance in our life in a deliberate and conscious way. This is done through our daily thought process, prayers, in our decision making and through thanksgiving. In essence, to acknowledge God is to invite His hand to guide us, His wisdom to enlighten us, and His love to sustain us on our journey.

One example from the Bible that demonstrates recognizing God in every aspect of life is found in the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. Throughout his life, Joseph consistently acknowledged the presence and sovereignty of God.  When Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt, he maintained his faith in God, trusting that God had a plan for him. His unwavering faith allowed him to excel in whatever position he was placed in, whether as a servant in Potiphar’s house or as a prisoner in Pharaoh’s prison. Eventually, Joseph was promoted to a position of authority where he played a pivotal role in saving both Egypt and his own family from famine.

Through Joseph's story, we learn to fully rely on God, not only trusting in God but actively acknowledging God in all our ways by aligning ourselves with His divine purpose and inviting His guidance to lead us through life's trials and triumphs.

  1. And He Shall Direct Your Paths

This is the promise for those who fully rely on God. This promise is not that the journey will be without obstacles, but that God will make our paths straight. This does not imply a life that will be free from challenges but a life where challenges are met with divine guidance, support and strength.

There are many examples of individuals in the Bible where we can see how God directs the paths of those who fully rely on Him. One such example is Abraham. When God called Abraham to leave his country and go to a land He would show him, Abraham obeyed without knowing the destination (Genesis 12:1-4). His faith and trust in God's promise were rewarded as God led him to the land of Canaan, establishing him as the father of many nations. Another example is Moses, who, despite his initial reluctance, trusted God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Throughout the journey, Moses relied on God's guidance, and the Lord directed their paths with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21-22).

  1. Conclusion

In embracing the spirit of F.R.O.G., we will find our life filled with adventure, peace and fulfilment, knowing that with each leap of faith, we are not jumping into the unknown, but into the loving arms of our Creator. Remember to fully rely on God when facing anxiety and uncertainty in life. Let us leap boldly and courageously like a frog, trusting that God will transform our fears into faith and guide us on the path He has set before us. As we trust in Him with all our hearts, lean not on our own understanding, and acknowledge Him in all our ways, He promises to direct our paths, making them straight and leading us toward His divine purpose.

Exploring Christianity

7 July – 14 August 2024, 9.30am – 10.45am @ Life B-P Church Beulah Centre.

What is the meaning of life? Why am I here? If there is a good and powerful God, why do we have global pandemics and unrest in this world?  The answers to these questions can be found in the Bible, which is God's word to man.
Exploring Christianity is a course that looks at how the Bible addresses these pertinent questions about life. It is a 5-part series and is suitable for (1) Non-Christians seeking God and (2) Christians who would like to learn how to evangelise
All Lifers are encouraged to bring their non-Christian friends and family members to this introductory course on the Christian faith. Register at https://tinyurl.com/ECJULY24
