HOW’RE WE BUILDING?

Working on the theme of “Building up the church of Christ” sometimes feels like renovating a home while living in it. There are constraints on how much you can do at one time and how fast it can be done. Allowances have to be made, schedules accommodated and preferences considered. Of course, it is rewarding when the plan comes together and you can see progress being made.   In this effort, I believe our church has been blessed with an abundance of willing hearts and hands and this is something to praise and thank God for.

It’s been about 7 months since we announced the plans arising from the church planning conference and 5 months since we started the pulpit series on “Repentance, Restoration, Renewal and Revival” – all focused on the theme of “Building up the church of Christ”. Now is as good a time as any to reflect upon the task and consider the way forward.

There are many passages of Scripture that speak about building. For our meditation, I’d like to share some reflections on 1 Corinthians 3:9-11 – “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

  1. “…labourers together with God”

It is amazing enough that God should save us from sin and cover us with the righteousness of Christ. Surely, it is an even greater honour to be called to labour alongside God. Not that we are in any way equal, but to be employed in process of building He directs, and which is finally accomplished  by His sovereign power and grace, is a tremendous blessing.

  1. “…God’s husbandry, … God’s building”

We are not building something for our own honour, nor by our feeble strength. Rather, it is God who is the chief architect and husbandman who showers grace upon us, choosing us to be His lively stones and builds us up to a spiritual house, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to Himself. All of us are called to build, and are to remember that we build upon what   others have built, even if only very few will be positioned like Paul, as masterbuilders. So we do well to remember those who have gone before us, who have been faithful in their labour in God’s vineyard, in building His church.

  1. Take care how we build

The manner in which we conduct the building matters to God. For He set a pattern for the work of building. Consider the intricate instructions He gave the Israelites for the Tabernacle and the manner in which worship was to be conducted. Inasmuch as we declare that these foreshadowed Christ and the outward form is now past because Christ has come and been that perfect sacrifice to end all other sacrifices, and the veil of the temple has been torn, the purpose of God’s instructions, the strict necessity for holiness and reverence must never be ignored. Nor should we lose sight of how    repentance, restoration, renewal and revival are concepts woven into the form of  worship carried out at the Tabernacle. For all this reminds us that …

  1. Christ is the only foundation

Surely, this must be our singular focus. For “all scripture points to Christ”. Without Him, there is no salvation for sinners, no restoration of the relationship between God and man, no restoration of creation to what God intended. This truth ought to constantly focus our minds on the goal, the “… the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:14). We take great care in building for we strive for Christ-likeness, for we would not shame the name of Christ, for we yearn for His commendation. If we indeed build on Christ, then, as He has said, we are that wise man that builds on a rock and not on the sand. Our faith has a sure foundation that no threatening of man can shake. If we preach Christ crucified for our sins and risen from the dead as our hope for eternity, we have a sure and certain message that no philosophy of man can misdirect us from. If we seek conformity with Christ, we show ourselves good citizens of His kingdom.

I count it a tremendous blessing to be working alongside many faithful brethren, eager to do the work of the Lord, building His church, labouring in His vineyard. Many have been encouraging, many praying. Many have been warm in their fellowship, gentle in their feedback – which is so welcome. Many are enthusiastic about preaching the gospel. Sometimes, in a large church, it is easy to miss all these signs of God’s blessings. But the signs are there if we would see them. And we would do well to constantly praise God for each encouragement He gives us through faithful friends. Soli Deo Gloria.

Exploring Christianity

7 July – 14 August 2024, 9.30am – 10.45am @ Life B-P Church Beulah Centre.

What is the meaning of life? Why am I here? If there is a good and powerful God, why do we have global pandemics and unrest in this world?  The answers to these questions can be found in the Bible, which is God's word to man.
Exploring Christianity is a course that looks at how the Bible addresses these pertinent questions about life. It is a 5-part series and is suitable for (1) Non-Christians seeking God and (2) Christians who would like to learn how to evangelise
All Lifers are encouraged to bring their non-Christian friends and family members to this introductory course on the Christian faith. Register at https://tinyurl.com/ECJULY24
