INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY

The young people in our church saw the benefits of intergenerational ministry. Last year on the 2nd December, the teens from Lively Teens Fellowship organized a Christmas carolling with the seniors and it was a very edifying time of remembering God’s love and ministering to one another.  Once again, the young people organized a joint fellowship outing last month with the Senior Fellowship to the Floral Fantasy at Gardens by the Bay. The young and the old assembled together in church for a time of worship and fellowship over lunch before we proceeded for the outing.  It was encouraging to see them eating, laughing and interacting with one another.

The benefits of intergenerational ministry should not be overlooked and we ought to realize that the church is the body of Christ, “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ...For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body?  But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you” (1 Corinthians 12:12, 14-21)

Intergenerational ministry will lead to a cohesive church enjoying unity in diversity—of age and of spiritual gifts. The other benefits are: it will lead to spiritual maturity when iron sharpens iron (cf. Proverbs 27:17), mutual love and forbearance and discipleship (cf. Titus 2:4). Moreover, children need the adult members of the church to disciple them to grow as fruitful, persevering members. Likewise, as the elderly and adults see the youths growing in maturity and godliness they would be encouraged to grow as fruitful, courageous followers of Christ.   As the Psalmist says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

Therefore, we ought to be intentional on intergenerational ministry. Each individual fellowship group should not be siloed with its own programmes. It will result in little engagement with the wider church. We need to realize that we are a family of Christ, as God’s Word reminds us, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:5,6). We are not strangers to one another.

One of our youth leaders, Ryan Lim gave a devotion before we went for the outing to the Floral Fantasy. He spoke on We are Not Strangers from Ephesians 2:19-22. He exhorted us that as a church, we ought not to mirror the socially divided society that we live in. He remarked, “A common phrase being thrown around now is this term: “generation gap”. And that encapsulates it pretty well doesn’t it? Millennials look down on Boomers for their backwards mindset and outdated ways of doing things. Older generations look down on young people for their lack of morals or ethics or responsibility. And the result is a society wholly divided. Brethren, this is not to be so in Christ’s community.”

As a church, we are in the world but not of the world. The word “church” means “the called-out ones” which means we are called out or set apart from the world. Intergenerational ministry requires intentional effort by the respective fellowship groups to come out of their comfort zone to build relationships with those of different ages. Programmes and activities need to be planned not just for the group itself but also with the lens of intergenerational ministry. There is a need to identify opportunities for engagements to bring generations together. To create opportunities for generations to serve God together with their spiritual gifts. Also, “with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:2-3)

We pray that we will endeavour to build a united church family that is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ through Salvation, Sanctification and Service, to the glory of God. This would be a reality and not a fantasy when ministry leaders are intentional on intergenerational ministry.
