OUR CHRISTIAN KINDERGARTEN
Last Thursday, Far Eastern Kindergarten (FEK) celebrated its 54th Anniversary. We thank God for giving Life B-P Church the opportunity to provide quality pre-school education for the last 54 years. Despite numerous challenges, our Christian kindergarten has held its place among the pre-school community as a reputable kindergarten that is known for its creative and holistic curriculum, character education programme and excellent care of children.
FEK started its first classes on Monday, 28 April 1969 with 53 children. Within a year of its opening, the enrolment increased to 97 with a staff of five teachers and a principal. In 1971 it progressed to having two sessions. Since then, more than a thousand children have received their foundational education here, and we have also had a number of second generation children whose parents had graduated from FEK.
We thank God that FEK’s enrolment has kept steady over the years, and that we presently have about 160 children. We are also blessed with very dedicated and competent staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth-running of the kindergarten and the well-being of the children.
A survey was conducted in October 2022 to analyse why parents choose to send their children to FEK. A total of 22 parents of K2 children were asked to give their responses in this survey. Here are the responses of Mrs Grace Goh, the mother of Natalie (K2A, 2019) and Isaiah (K2A, 2022):
Why FEK?
FEK is a place near to my heart - I have donned the blue checks as a little girl, and have had fond memories of the teachers, principal and friends. The small seed sown from FEK decades ago has had a big impact in my life - and I hope to have my kids experience that Christian education too.
Why choose to give up branded kindies for FEK besides cheaper school fees?
The Christian environment FEK provides, allows my children to grow up being taught Christian values both in English & Mandarin, learn about God’s word through the little activities and stories they hear - this far exceeds the “exposure” branded kindies can offer.
Why FEK when it’s cheaper to send your child to MOE kindergartens?
The curriculum quality of FEK and the dedication of every teaching staff we’ve had the privilege to meet, has shown us parents how much love and care they have for our children.
Why FEK when it’s more convenient to go for government funded childcare centres?
In today’s society where most families have both parents working, it is definitely more convenient to place my children in childcare centres. However, we see the stark contrast in the learning environments, and our family support system is committed to support our decision to put our children at FEK.
Will other church kindergartens do besides FEK?
I am a member of Life BP, and am very happy to be a part of the church community alongside other members of our church.
In other words, what attracts you to FEK?
FEK keeps my children safe - learning about Christ during their formative years, they are always few steps ahead of us parents and more importantly, allow our children to build memories they so fondly look back upon, years after they leave FEK.
In recent years, many Christian kindergartens have closed or converted to childcare centres, and almost all the remaining church-based kindergartens are seeing dwindling enrolment due to stiff competition from the government-supported preschools and large commercial operators.
Please pray that God will enable our Christian kindergarten to overcome the following challenges in the years ahead: (1) Maintaining a good enrolment of children; (2) Attracting qualified and committed Christian preschool teachers to join our staff; and (3) Sufficient financial resources, especially with the anticipated increase in salaries of preschool educators over the next two years.
May our Christian kindergarten continue to be a place where children’s lives are shaped to grow in grace, and develop good character. – Pastor
