Psalm 119:103-105

How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! [104] Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. [105] Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 

Although we live in the midst of wickedness and deception, we are blessed to have instruction and guidance from the true Word of God to illumine our darkest paths, and to give us instruction for difficult and morally trying circumstances. The psalmist describes his passion and desire for the Word, to him it is sweeter than honey. He not only reads it but also lives it out through meditation until he forms moral convictions which govern his way of life. He hates every false or evil way which displeases God. The Word illumines his steps, they provide clarity to his path. 

The Christian similarly acknowledges the Authority of God’s Word and upholds it by imbibing and applying the Word. Hebr 4:12 describes the Word as quick and powerful or as living and active which can pierce the inner recesses of the heart and mind as a sword is able to divide the soul and spirit and even the bone and marrow. It is further described as being able to judge our thoughts and intentions of the heart. James 1:23 compares the Word to a mirror that  reveals our true nature. It is a manual that reveals who we are and how we are to live aright. 

Ps 19:7-11 describes the law of the Lord as perfect, converting or restoring the soul. The Word which is the testimony of the Lord is sure, fully dependable and free of falsehood, it makes us wise if we believe and obey it. And unlike false religion and worldly human philosophy which will mislead us to destruction, the statutes of the Lord and right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear or reverential awe of the Lord is clean, enduring forever. What can we find today that is clean and pure but instructions which comes from our Creator. The judgements of the Lord are completely true and righteousness. The Word is more precious than fine gold and sweeter that honey and the honeycomb. And finally, the Word warns us against falsehood and keeps us from destruction if we choose to obey it. And there is great reward in keeping them. 

It is because of this high regard for the Word of God, that the Sunday School exists. It is God’s love letter to us His church. And it will do us well to pay heed to its instructions and to diligently study to obey it. 

Let us take heed of the warning in Hosea 4:6,

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” 

Let us in humble obedience take note of Joshua 1:8,

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” 

The description “Prosperous and good success” may not necessarily mean worldly financial prosperity, although Singapore is already blessed with it through the wise and honest government that God has providentially placed over us, we thank God for it. But prosperity and good success are as described in Psalm 1:1-3,

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. [3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” 

The godly man in the process of glorifying God, also enjoys the blessing of being in accord with God. 

It is the work of the godly man who delights in and studies the Word, who trusts and obeys God. He does the will of God and his life and work will bear fruit, his leaf will not wither and what he does shall prosper. Dear reader, do you desire the above blessing? The Lord surely desires that for us. 

To repent and to receive His blessings. 2 Peter 3:9,

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
